THAT'S EVERYTHING THAT'S BEEN GOING ON WITH THE SAINTS THESE PAST TWO MONTHS.
I'LL SEE YOU NEXT MONTH TO REPORT BACK WITH THE SAINTS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. [APPLAUSE]
>> THANK YOU, MADDY. RECOGNITION OF COMMUNITY PARTNERS.
[13. FEATURED PRESENTATIONS]
>> SWITCH THIS AROUND A LITTLE BIT.
>> AS WE KNOW IN OFTEN STATE, BONITA UNIFIED IS ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL DISTRICTS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA.
[00:15:02]
WE TAKE GREAT PRIDE IN OUR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT, OUR SUCCESS ON THE ATHLETIC FIELDS, AND OUR OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCES IN THE ARTS.WE HAVE NEARLY 1,200 EMPLOYEES THROUGHOUT OUR DISTRICT THAT WORK WITH STUDENTS DAILY TO ENSURE THAT SUCCESS.
HOWEVER, WE KNOW THAT WE DO NOT ACHIEVE OUR ACCOLADES ALONE.
STRONG COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS ARE CRUCIAL FOR THE DISTRICT.
WE HAVE MANY DEDICATED INDIVIDUALS THROUGHOUT OUR COMMUNITY WHO SUPPORT OUR STAFF, STUDENTS, AND THEIR FAMILIES WITH CONTRIBUTIONS OF TIME, MONEY, AND RESOURCES.
TONIGHT, WE'LL RECOGNIZE TWO OF OUR OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY PARTNERS WHO, BECAUSE OF THEIR WORK AND SACRIFICE, MODEL TO OUR STUDENTS VALUABLE LIFE, LESSONS ABOUT GENEROSITY, COMMUNITY, AND THE POWER OF GIVING BACK.
FIRST PARTNER THAT WE'D LIKE TO ACKNOWLEDGE TONIGHT IS CHRIS SUCHANEK AND HIS TEAM FROM PROJECT BOON.
[APPLAUSE] ACCOMPANYING CHRIS TONIGHT IS HIS WIFE, ANA KARINA.
THERE SHE IS. [APPLAUSE] CHRIS IS THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND CO-FOUNDER OF PROJECT BOON, AN ORGANIZATION FOUNDED IN 2011, THAT AIMS TO COMBAT FOOD INSECURITY AND PROVIDE VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES IN OUR COMMUNITY.
IN 2021, CHRIS REACHED OUT TO OUR DISTRICT TO OFFER BACKPACKS TO STUDENTS IN NEED.
OVER THE LAST FOUR YEARS, CHRIS'S TEAM HAS DONATED NEARLY 500 BACKPACKS, FILLED WITH SUPPLIES AND MATERIALS FOR OUR STUDENTS.
CHRIS, A FORMER STUDENT OF BONITA UNIFIED, NOTED THAT PROJECT BOON IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR HIM TO, "GIVE BACK A LITTLE OF WHAT HAS BEEN GIVEN TO HIM." OUR DISTRICT IS JUST ONE SMALL PIECE OF THE WORK PROJECT BOON IS DOING, BOTH IN OUR LOCAL AREA AND INTERNATIONALLY.
PROJECT BOON HAS DISTRIBUTED NEARLY 400,000 MEALS TO PEOPLE IN NEED AND PROVIDED NEARLY 50,000 HOURS OF VOLUNTEERISM.
THE BOARD OF EDUCATION WOULD LIKE TO PRESENT CHRIS SUCHANEK AND THE PROJECT BOON TEAM WITH THE DISTRICT'S MOST PRESTIGIOUS HONOR, OUR PURPOSE AWARD FOR THEIR EXCEPTIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE STUDENTS AND FAMILIES IN OUR COMMUNITY.
CONGRATULATIONS, CHRIS. [APPLAUSE] TAKE A PICTURE HERE.
GO STAND IN THE FRONT AND I'M GOING TO RETURN TO YOU IN A SECOND.
THEN NOW I'D LIKE TO CALL VICKY MALISZEWSKI TO THE PODIUM.
[APPLAUSE] VICKY HAS BEEN A RESIDENT OF LA VERNE SINCE 1994.
OVER THE YEARS, VICKY HAS BEEN A MEMBER AND AN OFFICEHOLDER OF THE PTAS OF GRACE MILLER, ALLEN AVENUE, LONE HILL MIDDLE, BONITA HIGH SCHOOL, AND CHAP VISTA HIGH SCHOOL.
CURRENTLY, SHE'S THE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE BONITA COUNCIL PTA.
VICKY IS ALSO A MEMBER OF SEVERAL COMMUNITY GROUPS THAT SUPPORT BUSD SCHOOLS, INCLUDING THE LA VERNE SAN DIMAS EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION, BONITA ATHLETIC BOOSTERS, SAN DIMAS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, AND THE SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL OF SAN DIMAS AND LA VERNE.
ADDITIONALLY, VICKY'S ON THE SAN DIMAS LITTLE LEAGUE BOARD AND IS A MEMBER OF THE SAN DIMAS SHERIFF STATION BOOSTER CLUB, AND I'M SHOCKED SHE HAD TIME TO COME TONIGHT TO ACCEPT THE AWARDS.
[LAUGHTER] IN ADDITION, TO HER GENEROUSLY GIVING THE GIFT OF TIME TO OUR SCHOOLS, VICKY IS ALSO A SIGNIFICANT FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTOR TO OUR DISTRICT.
ANNUALLY, VICKY PROVIDES A NUMBER OF SCHOLARSHIPS TO GRADUATING SENIORS.
AS A SPONSOR FOR EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION.
HAS CONTRIBUTED TO ENSURE SAN DIMAS HIGH SCHOOL'S PRODUCTION OF THE EVERY 15 MINUTES PROGRAM, HAS GIVEN TO BONITA HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS AND HAS SPONSORED BONITA'S 8TH GRADE PARENT NIGHT.
ADDITIONALLY, SHE ALSO DONATES GIFT BASKETS TO OUR SITES AND PROVIDES THE OCCASIONAL BREAKFAST OR LUNCH TO OUR SCHOOL STAFF AND MAKES ME REALIZE I'VE DONE NOTHING WITH MY LIFE.
>> I KNOW, SHE'S SENDING ME STUFF, TOO.
I DO WANT TO PAUSE FOR A MOMENT AND CONSIDER THE LIST OF GIVING.
IT'S INCREDIBLE AND STAGGERING, AND I'LL JUST SAY THAT OUR WORLD WOULD BE A SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER PLACE IF WE HAD MORE VICKY MALISZEWSKIS IN IT.
WITH GRATITUDE FOR THIS WORK, THE BOARD OF EDUCATION WOULD LIKE TO PRESENT VICKY MALISZEWSKI WITH THE DISTRICT'S HIGHEST HONOR, OUR PURPOSE AWARD FOR A DEDICATION AND COMMITMENT TO THE STUDENTS AND FAMILIES IN BONITA UNIFIED. THANK YOU.
>> LET'S GO IN FRONT TO GET ANOTHER ONE.
[00:20:35]
>> UNLESS YOU WANT TO HEAR THE CONSENT AGENDA, IT'S A GOOD TIME TO EXIT. THANKS FOR COMING.
[BACKGROUND] THEY DROPPED THE COIN.
>> IT'S LITTLE, GIVE HIM A NEW ONE.

REPORTS FROM MEMBERS OF THE BOARD AND SUPERINTENDENT. GO AHEAD, GLENN.
[17. REPORTS FROM MEMBERS OF THE BOARD AND SUPERINTENDENT]
>> WELL, SINCE THIS IS MY NEXT TO LAST MEETING, I THOUGHT I'D MAKE MY COMMENTS LONG, BUT SINCE THE INITIAL SMUDGE CROWN GAME GOES AT 7:15 TONIGHT AT BONITA, I'M GOING TO KEEP THEM SHORT.
I'D LIKE TO ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO GET OUT AND VOTE ON NOVEMBER 5TH.
CONGRATULATE THE CHAPARRAL CULINARY STUDENTS FOR WINNING THE CHILI COOK-OFF AGAIN AND GIVE ME A SHOUT OUT TO VMA BECAUSE THEY HAD OUR SMUDGE CROWN TEAMS, BOTH BONITA AND SAN DIMAS, FEATURED ON CHANNEL 4 AT 4:45 TONIGHT.
ABC IS SUPPOSED TO BE AT THE GAME DOING INTERVIEWS AND GETTING FOOTAGE FOR THE INITIAL SMUDGE CROWN.
WE HAVEN'T GOT THAT MUCH OUT OF OUR SMUDGE POT EXCEPT FOR THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY.
I ANTICIPATE ANOTHER 23 YEARS, THEY'LL BE BACK FOR SMUDGE POT AND A FEW MORE, THEY'LL BE BACK FOR SMUDGE CROWN, BUT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT AND GO OUT AND WATCH IT TONIGHT ON THEIR INITIAL GIRLS FLAG FOOTBALL GAME. THAT'S IT.
[00:25:02]
>> FIRST, I DEFINITELY WANT TO ECHO THE WORDS OF MANY PEOPLE.
WE HAVE A LOT OF COMMUNITY PARTNERS WHO DO A LOT OF WONDERFUL WORK FOR US, AND I REALLY WANTED TO CONGRATULATE BOTH VICKY AND MARK.
I KNOW VICKY IS A PERSONAL FRIEND AND SHE IS AS AMAZING, IF NOT MORE AMAZING AS A FRIEND THAN SHE IS AS A COMMUNITY PERSON, BUT SHE DOES A LOT.
I DO WANT TO GIVE ONE EXAMPLE.
I WENT TO A CHAP VISTA GRADUATION, WHICH WAS AMAZING.
IT WAS ACTUALLY PRETTY TOUCHING.
BUT THEY HAD THESE AWARDS AND IT WAS THE VICKY MALISZEWSKI AWARD OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
THE PERSON ACTUALLY HAD TO KNOW HOW TO SAY HER NAME BECAUSE IT WAS JUST THAT NAME FREQUENTLY.
FOR THOSE PEOPLE WHO REALLY DONATE THAT TIME TO MAKE OUR DISTRICT A BETTER PLACE, AND IT'S COMMUNITY PEOPLE. IT'S ALSO STAFF.
THERE'S THE BLURRED MINDS THERE AND YOU HAVE A LOT OF STAFF WHO DO THOSE THINGS.
THANK YOU FOR MAKING OUR COMMUNITY A BETTER PLACE.
WE DO HAVE A COUPLE OF PEOPLE ON THE DAIS INVOLVED IN COMMUNITY GROUPS TOO.
I JUST WANT TO THANK THOSE PEOPLE.
CHRIS ANN, THANK YOU FOR INVITING ME TO THE SOROPTIMIST THING.
I JUST WENT TO SUPPORT SOROPTIMIST, BECAUSE THEY WERE SUPPORTING OUR KIDS, AND THEY HAD A TRIVIA NIGHT.
IT TURNED OUT TO BE SUPER FUN.
I WAS LIKE, MY GOSH, I SHOULD INVITE FRIENDS TO THIS.
GREG, THANK YOU FOR ALL THE WORK YOU DO FOR THE MASONIC LODGE FOR THE ROTARY AND FOR ALL THE THINGS YOU DO TOO.
I APPRECIATE THAT AS A COMMUNITY MEMBER.
I THINK IT SPEAKS WELL OF YOU GUYS.
I DON'T KNOW IF YOU'RE IN ANY COMMUNITY HERE, BUT I KNOW YOU DID A LOT WITH THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT AND STUFF.
YOU'RE DEFINITELY IN THAT TOO, IN PTA FOR SURE.
ALSO, WOULD LIKE TO CONGRATULATE BRAD.
WE HAVE A NEW CITY MANAGER IN SAN DIMAS.
FIRST, I WENT TO THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE TO SAY GOODBYE TO A VERY GOOD CITY MANAGER CHRIS CONSTANTIN.
IT SEEMS LIKE THEY FOUND ANOTHER GOOD CITY MANAGER IN BRAD.
EVERYTHING I'VE HEARD ABOUT HIM HAS BEEN STELLAR.
I'D ALSO LIKE TO THANK EMMETT BADAR.
I THINK HE WAS HERE AS A PERSON WHO CARES ABOUT OUR DISTRICT AND CARES ABOUT PEOPLE.
HE JUST SHOWED UP AS A PERSON TO BE THERE TO SUPPORT HER, AND I THINK THAT SPEAKS WELL WHEN YOU NOT ONLY SEE PEOPLE AT SMUDGE POT GAMES, YOU NOT ONLY SEE PEOPLE AT FOOTBALL GAMES, BUT YOU SEE THEM IN THE DAY TO DAY ACTIONS OF OUR DISTRICT, AND THANK YOU, EMMETT FOR BEING A PART OF THE BONITA COMMUNITY AS WELL.
THERE'S A LOT OF GOOD STUFF GOING ON IN BONITA.
THEY'RE NOT JUST FANTASTIC LIKE CUPERTINO, FANTASTIC.
IF YOU LOOK AT CUPERTINO, I THINK EVERYONE WHO LIVES THERE WAS VAL VICTORIAN AND ODDLY ENOUGH, THEIR KIDS TEST WELL.
WHEN THE TOP SCHOOL DISTRICT, SHE'S LIKE, OF COURSE.
BONITA IS ONE OF THE TOP SCHOOL DISTRICTS AS WELL.
WE, BUT THEY ARE JUST KNOCKING IT OUT OF THE PARK AND WHEN YOU COMPARE IT TO COMMUNITIES BECAUSE IT'S ONE THING TO SAY, HOW GOOD ARE YOU COMPARED TO EVERYONE? IF YOU JUST HAPPEN TO HAVE VAL VICTORIANS, PRETTY GOOD.
BUT WHEN YOU COMPARE WITH COMMUNITIES, I THINK THAT'S REALLY WHERE YOU SEE IF AN ORGANIZATION SHINES OR NOT.
BONITA'S TEST SCORES ARE PHENOMENAL.
WE'RE TALKING HOWEVER YOU WANT TO BREAK THEM DOWN, THEY'RE FANTASTIC. PLEASE LOOK AT THEM.
I WAS VERY HAPPY TO SEE THAT COVID HAS ENDED ONLY IN BONITA SO YAY FOR THAT.
WE ALSO HAVE ROBUST MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAMS. IF YOU LOOK AT THE NEWS, YOU'RE ALWAYS GOING TO HAVE PEOPLE TALK ABOUT WE NEED MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES.
IF THE TOPIC'S ON GUNS, WE NEED MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES.
IF THE TOPIC'S ON SCREEN TIME, WE NEED MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES.
IN BONITA, WE HAVE MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES.
I THINK THAT HAS ACTUALLY HELPED THE TEST SCORES, AND I'M GLAD FOR THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE ADVOCATED FOR THAT.
THANK YOU FOR HELPING PUSH SUPPORT FOR KIDS IN CRISIS.
WE ALSO HAVE FANTASTIC READING PROGRAM.
I'VE ALSO SAID THANK YOU TO THE PEOPLE WHO HELPED THAT.
WE HAVE TRADE PATHWAYS, BECAUSE NOT ALL KIDS ARE GOING TO GO TO COLLEGE, AND WE HAVE A FANTASTIC TRADE PROGRAM.
I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU FOR HELPING ALL OF OUR KIDS, NOT JUST SOME OF OUR KIDS.
BECAUSE IF YOU JUST HAVE ONE TEMPLATE, YOU'RE NOT HELPING EVERYONE.
IF YOU HAVE TEMPLATES FOR MULTIPLE TYPES OF PEOPLE OR PEOPLE WITH DIFFERENT ASPIRATIONS, I THINK THAT HELPS.
FINALLY, BECAUSE I KNOW MATT IS A FAN OF BASKETBALL, AS I AM.
I READ A STORY ABOUT STEPH CURRY, NOT SETH CURRY, WRONG CURRY BROTHER.
>> HE IS A FANTASTIC BASKETBALL PLAYER, HE HAS DONE A GREAT JOB AS A BASKETBALL PLAYER, AND HE HAS WON MANY AWARDS.
[00:30:01]
WELL, SOMEONE EMAILED HIM, I THINK IT WAS MAYBE EMAIL, MAYBE IT WAS TWITTER, I DON'T KNOW.BUT THEY WERE PRETTY MUCH SAYING, HEY, YOU HAVE SHOES FOR BOYS, YOU DON'T HAVE SHOES FOR GIRLS, IT WOULD BE GREAT IF YOU HAD SHOES FOR GIRLS.
HERE SOMEONE IS DOING A GREAT JOB ON SO MANY THINGS.
HE'S LIKE, YOU ARE RIGHT, AND WE'LL WORK ON IT.
ON ONE SIDE, YOU HAVE BONITA, MUCH LIKE SETH CURRY, CHAMPIONSHIP DISTRICT.
BUT WHAT I APPRECIATE ABOUT THE BONITA WAY IS OR HOW FANTASTIC WE ARE AND HAVE PERFORMED.
WE'RE ALWAYS STRIVING FOR BETTER.
I REALLY APPRECIATE THAT THE DISTRICT AND THE BOARD AND OUR SUPERINTENDENT IS WORKING FOR BETTER.
UNFORTUNATELY, WITH SCHOOL DISTRICTS, BETTER SOMETIMES TAKES YEARS TO HAPPEN, SO WHEN YOU SEE SUCCESS, JUST KNOW THAT THE SHIP WAS TURNED SLOWLY AND THESE THINGS WERE DONE INTENTIONALLY.
BUT WE ARE DEFINITELY WORKING TOWARDS BETTER.
I DID SAY THAT WAS IT, SO THAT'S ALL I GOT.
>> THANK YOU, DERICK. I WOULD ADD WE HAVE A WONDERFUL SCHOOL DISTRICT AND WONDERFUL COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND EVERYONE IS SO HELPFUL.
ONE OF THE RESULTS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE HAVE ALL THAT IS THAT WE HAVE MORE AND MORE CHILDREN WANTING TO COME TO BONITA.
WE'RE NOT A DECLINING ENROLLMENT DISTRICT, AND 20-25% OF OUR CHILDREN COME FROM OUTSIDE THE DISTRICT, SO WE'RE SERVING MORE THAN JUST THE COMMUNITIES OF SAN DIMAS AND LA VERNE.
IT TAKES A VILLAGE AND THIS IS JUST A REALLY FANTASTIC VILLAGE.
I WILL SPEAK ON THE SOROPTIMIST TRIVIA CONTEST, IT WAS SO TERRIFIC AND IT WAS THE, I BELIEVE IT WAS OUR ASSOCIATIONS TEAM, THAT TOOK THE TOURNAMENT.
SECOND YEAR IN A ROW IF I'M NOT YES.
CSEA, WE HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE NEXT YEAR.[LAUGHTER] WE RAISED MORE THAN $8,000 IN ONE EVENING, AND IT WAS A LOT OF FUN AND AGAIN, THERE WERE COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND MAYOR, CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS THERE, PLENTY OF PARENTS.
IT WAS A REALLY GOOD TIME AND THANK YOU BONITA UNIFIED FOR SUPPORTING THAT.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE APPROVED FOR THIS BOARD MEETING IS THAT OCTOBER 13 THROUGH 19TH IS THE WEEK OF THE ADMINISTRATOR, AND WE HAVE FANTASTIC ADMINISTRATORS HERE, AND WE WELCOMED SO MANY NEW ONES THIS YEAR THAT CAME TO US WITH SO MANY TALENTS.
AND I WANT THE COMMUNITY TO KNOW THAT THE FEEDBACK THAT YOUR BOARD IS GETTING IS THAT WE HAD SOME REALLY GOOD HIRES AND PEOPLE ARE VERY HAPPY OUT THERE WITH OUR PRINCIPLES.
I WENT TO THE CHILLY CONTEST AND I THINK I KNOW EXACTLY THE CHILLY THAT CAME WAS IT FROM CHAP?
>> THAT ONE, THOSE WERE SO DELICIOUS, IT WAS REALLY HARD TO CHOOSE, BUT THAT WAS AN ENJOYABLE DAY HERE AT THE DISTRICT.
LASTLY, BEFORE I END, I DID WANT TO SAY I'M RECEIVING A FEW EMAILS ABOUT THE UPCOMING ELECTION AND WE KNOW THAT GLENN.
IS GOING TO BE RETIRING OUT OF TRUSTEE AREA ONE AND SO I APPLIED BECAUSE THAT'S WHERE I LIVE, AND I'M FROM THE LAST TIME IT WAS AN OPEN ELECTION WITHIN THE DISTRICT FOR ME, BUT NOW I PUT IN MY PAPERWORK FOR TRUSTEE AMAN, AND NO ONE IS RUNNING AGAINST ME, SO I WILL NOT BE ON THE BALLOT.
THE REASON I WANTED TO SAY THAT IS I'VE GOTTEN A FEW PHONE CALLS SO PEOPLE WHO ARE CONFUSED LIKE, WHY IS YOUR NAME NOT THERE? YES, I AM RUNNING FOR THAT TRUSTEE NOT REALLY RUNNING, BUT I WILL BE THERE FOR THAT END OF THE DISTRICT, WHICH ENCOMPASSES GLADSTONE, AND LONE HILL, LITTLE BIT OF SHOAL.
THE HIGH SCHOOL, SAN DIMAS HIGH SCHOOL, VA VERDE, AND OF COURSE, WE REPRESENT EVERYBODY, BUT IF YOU VOTE IN THAT AREA, YOU WON'T SEE MY NAME ON THERE, BUT IT'S BECAUSE NO ONE RAN AGAINST ME. IT'S NICE THING.
>> SOUNDS GOOD. CHILLY WAS GREAT.
YES, CONGRATS TO CHAP, CONGRATS TO EVERYONE.
THERE WAS A LOT OF REALLY GOOD CHILIES OUT THERE, SO I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE PUT THE HEARTS IN IT, AND IT SHOWED PAID OFF.
I'M GLAD I SKIPPED LUNCH THAT DAY JUST TO EAT THAT.
THANKS FOR MENTIONING BRAD MCKINNEY WINNING.
HE PROBABLY WON'T SEE HIM BECAUSE HIS DAUGHTER IS RIGHT NOW ABOUT TO PLAY SMUDGE CROWN.
HE'S GOING TO BE OUT THERE, SO WE GET OUT, WE COULD GO DOWN THERE.
THE ARTS, WE LIKE TO TALK ABOUT THE ARTS, THE PTA REFLECTIONS IS COMING UP.
I THINK IT IS CALLED ACCEPTING IMPERFECTIONS IS THEIR THEME, SO THAT'S OUT THERE.
[00:35:01]
HOPEFULLY, EVERYONE ACCEPTS OUR IMPERFECTIONS AS WELL THAT'S WHAT I'M WEARING.THIS TIE WAS MADE FROM HIS NAME IS DAVID SCARBOROUGH.
WHEN HE MADE IT, HE WAS IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, BUT HE CONTRIBUTES TO THAT EVERY YEAR, SO I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING WHAT THESE GUYS COME UP WITH THIS TIME.
ONE THING THAT THE MASONIC LODGE HERE IN SAN DIMAS IS DOING, WE'RE PARTNERING WITH EXTRA ELEMENTARY, WE ARE CHARITY THIS YEAR, I'M THE MASTER OF THE LODGE, I WAS ABLE TO PICK OUR CHARITY AND WE PICKED SHOES THAT FIT AND WHAT THAT IS.
IT'S A PROGRAM WHERE ALL THE MEMBERS PITCHED IN AND WE'RE ABLE TO PROVIDE BRAND NEW SHOES FOR STUDENTS.
IT COMES WITH THE BACKPACK AND MATERIALS AS WELL.
WE WERE ABLE TO FIT 40 STUDENTS IN NEED AT ELEMENTARY AND THAT SHOULD BE HAPPENING LATER THIS MONTH, SO VERY EXCITED ABOUT THAT.
THE DISTRICT DID HOST THE FENTANYL AWARENESS PROGRAM.
WE HAD A GREAT INFORMATION, THEY WERE GIVING OUT FREE NARCAN AND DEMONSTRATIONS FOR THAT.
I DID HEAR IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN HAVING SOME NARCAN, CLAREMONT PUBLIC LIBRARY DOES THAT AS WELL.
THEY'LL GIVE YOU A LITTLE TRAINING ON IT, AND THEN THEY'LL PROVIDE YOU WITH THAT FREE OF CHARGE.
WE WILL HAVE THE VIDEO SHOWN ON OUR WEBSITE, I BELIEVE.
PLEASE SHOW THAT WITH YOUR KIDS, WE KNOW THAT MY SISTER DID PASS AWAY, SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN 32 YEARS OLD TODAY.
THEN JUST REFLECT BECAUSE, I KNOW GLENN, IT'S ALMOST YOUR TERM UP, MIGHT BE MINE TOO, BUT I AM REFLECTING ON THE THINGS WE DID.
I AM PROUD OF WHERE WE CAME OVER THE LAST FOUR YEARS WITH THE MENTAL HEALTH, WITH THE EXPANSION OF TRADES, WITH THE SAFETY, WITH THE FENCING, SEEING US WHEN TOP WORKPLACE AWARD, PEOPLE ARE HAPPY TO BE HERE, KIDS ARE MOVING IN HERE.
I JUST HOPE WE CONTINUE THAT GOING FORWARD, I'M VERY EXCITED ABOUT OUR DISTRICT AND WHERE WE'RE GOING TO BE HAVING MY OWN KIDS HERE AND ON TO THAT, SUPERINTENDENT.
>> THANK YOU. I WANT TO START BY MAKING SURE THAT WE NEVER TAKE FOR GRANTED THE GREAT THINGS THAT HAPPENED IN THE DISTRICT, HAD THE GREAT FORTUNE THIS WEEK TO VISIT TWO SITES, GRACE MILLER AND GLADSTONE.
BOTH WHEN YOU WALK AT THOSE CLASSROOMS ARE AWESOME.
TEACHERS WERE FULLY ENGAGED, GREAT ENERGY.
KIDS WERE IN A MILLION HANDS SHOOTING UP EVERY TIME THE QUESTION WAS ASKED.
IT WAS AWESOME TO SEE AND SO I WANT TO THANK THE STAFF BOTH CERTIFICATED AND CLASSIFIED FOR ALL THE WORK THEY DO FOR THE 10,000 STUDENTS DAILY.
BUT IT REALLY WAS A SHOT IN THE ARM TO GO TO THOSE SITES AND SEE THE KIDS AND STAFF SO ENGAGED.
I ALSO WANT TO THANK, HE MENTIONED THE FENTANYL NIGHT, JUST THANK THE LA COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH FOR PUTTING IT ON AND I WANT TO HIGHLIGHT SENIOR DIRECTOR, STEVEN PATTERSON, WHO WAS RIGHT THERE.
HE DID TAKE THE LEAD IN THE INTRODUCTION PART ON BEHALF OF THE DISTRICT AND ANSWERED A NUMBER OF QUESTIONS THAT NIGHT AS PART OF THAT NIGHT, SO I APPRECIATE STEVEN BEING THERE.
I CAN'T WAIT TO GET OVER TO BONITA HIGH SCHOOL TO WATCH THAT INAUGURAL FOOTBALL GAME. THANK YOU.
>> REQUEST TO SPEAK ON NON AGENDA ITEMS,

TO ADDRESS THE BOARD ON NON AGENDA ITEMS, PLEASE COMPLETE REQUESTS TO ADDRESS THE BOARD CARD, WHICH MAY BE PICKED UP FROM MARGARET MCDONALD, SENIOR EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT TO THE SUPERINTENDENT.
ANY PERSON ADDRESSING THE BOARD SHOULD FIRST STATE THEIR NAME AND ASSOCIATION WITH THE DISTRICT, AND WE HAVE A STACK OF CARDS HERE.
FIRST IS PERSONAL INTRODUCTION FROM MARK ARVIDSON.
>> WELL, FIRST OF ALL, THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.
MY NAME IS DR. MARK ARVIDSON, AND I AM RUNNING FOR SCHOOL BOARD, BUT THIS IS NOT A CAMPAIGN SPEECH.
I JUST WANTED TO COME IN AND SAY, HI AND GIVE A LITTLE BIT OF BACKGROUND OF WHO I AM AND WHERE I'VE COME FROM AND I THANK YOU FOR ATTENDING AS WELL.
I'M A LONG TIME MATH TEACHER, SPENT ALMOST A DECADE IN BOLDON PARK, AND I WAS THE DIRECTOR OF THE GATE PROGRAM THERE, AND I ALSO DEVELOPED A DEVELOPMENTAL MATH PROGRAM TO GET GENERAL MATH STUDENTS UP TO THE ALGEBRA SEQUENCE.
WE SEEM TO HAVE A LOT OF STRUGGLES WITH STUDENTS HAVING THE SAME CLASS LIKE FIVE YEARS IN A ROW AND GETTING NO PROGRESS.
I WAS ABLE TO PUT A PROGRAM IN PLACE AND HAVE SOME GREAT SUCCESS WITH THAT.
I ALSO AM CURRENTLY THE DIRECTOR OF A MATH FELLOWS PROGRAM, WHICH IS LIKE GATE FOR UNIVERSITY FOR OUR BEST AND BRIGHTEST AT IS AZUSA PACIFIC UNIVERSITY, WHERE I'M CURRENTLY A PROFESSOR IN THE MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT, AND MY MAIN LANE IS TRAINING MATH TEACHERS.
FROM ELEMENTARY TO SECONDARY TO COMMUNITY COLLEGE, I'VE BEEN DOING THIS FOR ALMOST 30 YEARS AT APU, AND I'VE GOT A LOT OF MATH TEACHERS AROUND AND I'VE GOT PLENTY OF THEM IN THIS DISTRICT AS WELL.
SUPERINTENDENT WANTED ME TO ASK OR ASKED ME IF I COULD DO A LITTLE MATH LESSON WITH YOU. NO, JUST KIDDING.
[00:40:01]
ANYWAYS, I JUST WANTED TO CLOSE A LITTLE TRIANGLE HERE, GIVE YOU A LITTLE IDEA, AND I THINK THREE SIDED FIGURES ARE PRETTY NICE, AND PASSION, PURPOSE, AND PEOPLE ARE FRAMING UP WHAT I WANT TO BRING TO YOU TODAY.I DO HAVE A PASSION FOR EDUCATION.
I HAVE A PASSION FOR STUDENTS DOING WELL AND RISING TO THE EXPECTATIONS THAT YOU HAVE FOR THEM.
I'M ONE OF THOSE TEACHERS THAT YOU PUT THE BAR UP, WE DON'T LOWER THE BAR.
WE FIND OUT WAYS TO SUPPORT STUDENTS TO GET THEM OVER THE BAR AND HAVE THEM A DEEP SENSE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT.
I WAS HONORED BACK WHEN I WAS A HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER TO BE TEACHER OF THE YEAR AND I GOT A COMMENDATION FROM THE MAYOR OF LOS ANGELES FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE, AND I ALSO GOT A FACULTY OF THE YEAR AWARD AT AZUSA PACIFIC UNIVERSITY.
MY PASSION REALLY IS FOR STUDENTS AND HELPING THEM DO WELL.
PURPOSE, WHAT IS MY PURPOSE HERE? IT REALLY IS TAKING A FOUR DECADES OF EXPERIENCE AND BRINGING IT TO THE FORE.
I HAVE DEVELOPED A NUMBER OF PROGRAMS, I'VE MANAGED BUDGETS, AND I THINK I'D HAVE A LOT OF EXPERIENCE AND INSIGHT AND HELPING BONITA BE EVEN BETTER THAN IT IS.
I WANT TO CONGRATULATE YOU GUYS THAT THE MATH SCORES IS AN ENCOURAGEMENT TO ME AS A MATH PROFESSOR, THAT WE'RE NOT LAGGING, BUT I THINK THERE'S STILL WORK TO DO AND I'D BE LOVED TO BE PART OF THAT PROCESS TO ACTUALLY BE BETTER THAN CUPERTINO AND HIT THE VERY TOP OF THE PEAK.
LAST P WAS PEOPLE, AND YOU CAN'T DO THIS WITHOUT PEOPLE, AND I THINK FOR ME, IT'S ALMOST LIKE ANOTHER LITTLE MINI TRIANGLE.
YOU'VE GOT PARENTS INVOLVED ON ONE SIDE, YOU'VE GOT STUDENTS INVOLVED ON THE OTHER SIDE, AND YOU'VE GOT TEACHERS THAT ROUND IT OUT.
YOU CAN'T HAVE A CLOTHED SHAPE WITHOUT ALL THREE SIDES WORKING TOGETHER.
BOTTOM LINE IS, I LOOK FORWARD TO WORKING WITH YOU GUYS HOPEFULLY SOON RATHER THAN LATER AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME.
GIVE ME A CHANCE TO JUST COME IN AND INTRODUCE WHO MARK ARVIDSON IS, SO IT'S A PLEASURE.
>> THANK YOU.[APPLAUSE] ELI J TERATO.
>> GOOD EVENING. I JUST ALSO WANTED AN OPPORTUNITY TO COME TO THIS QUORUM AND JUST INTRODUCE MYSELF.
I'M ALSO RUNNING FOR THE BOARD OR FOR BONITA UNIFIED SCHOOL BOARD.
[NOISE] I JUST WANTED TO TELL A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MYSELF.
I'M ALSO WORKED WITH THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES FOR 22 PLUS YEARS, I THINK, RIGHT IN THERE.
I WORKED FOR MOSTLY LAPD NOT AS AN OFFICER, BUT AS A CIVILIAN.
I WAS INVOLVED IN MANY PROJECTS RUNNING FROM UPGRADING THE RADIOS, WORK IN THE 911 SYSTEM, AND ALSO THANKS TO MICROSOFT, CHANGING COMPUTERS, ALL 8,000 OF THEM FROM OF COURSE, NOT JUST ME PERSONALLY, BUT IT WAS A WHOLE TEAM.
I RAN THE PROJECT FOR WINDOWS 97 TO WINDOWS 7, WINDOWS 7 TO WINDOWS 10, SO THANKS FOR MICROSOFT TO KEEP ME BUSY, AND ALSO JUST PROJECTS FOR VARIOUS SYSTEMS THAT WE PUT IN.
INTERESTING ENOUGH, AS A PROJECT MANAGER, WE ALSO USED THE TRIANGLE.
WE USED IT WAS COST, TIME, WHAT WAS THE OTHER ONE, THE THIRD ONE WAS AND SCOPE.
I UNDERSTAND THAT IN PROJECTS THAT WE LOOK AT THE SCOPE, WE LOOK AT THE TIME WE GOT AND HOW MUCH WE HAVE.
WORKING FOR A GOVERNMENT, I UNDERSTAND THAT BUDGETS ARE ALWAYS A CONSTRAINT AND BUDGETS ARE ALWAYS NEVER ENOUGH FOR THE THINGS WE WANT TO GET DONE.
I'M SURE THAT THE BOARD DISTRICT IS NOT TO DIFFERENT AND MAYBE SAME ISSUE WITH BUDGETS AND MONEY.
BUT I THINK WITH THOSE TIME AND SCOPE AND COST, YOU GET QUALITY, AND THAT'S WHAT YOU WANT TO LOOK FOR.
ANYWAY, MY NAME IS ELI J TERATO RUNNING FOR BONITA UNIFIED, AND TRUSTEE AREA FOUR. THANK YOU.
>> HELLO, MY NAME IS KYLIE JENSEN AND I AM A STUDIO AT GLADSTONE.
I AM GOING TO TALK ABOUT WHAT SQUARE IS LIKE FOR ME.
YOU MIGHT NOT REALIZE IT, BUT I STRUGGLE WITH LOSING MY PLACE.
>> WHEN READING, COPYING THOSE FROM THE BOARD.
I'M WATCHING WORDS MOVE AND SWIM.
ON THE PAGE, THIS IS A STRUGGLE FOR ME TO FOCUS IN CLASS.
[00:45:01]
MY EYES HAVE TROUBLE WORKING TOGETHER AND KEEPING UP WITH EVERYTHING HAPPENING AROUND ME.AT SCHOOL, IT FEELS LIKE I AM TRYING MY BEST, BUT I JUST KEEP STRUGGLING.
I GET HEADACHES AND READING CAN FEEL VERY HARD.
SOMETIMES I GET FRUSTRATED BECAUSE I KNOW I AM SMART, BUT IT IS LIKE MY EYES AND MY BRAIN ARE GETTING IN THE WAY.
WHAT ALSO HURTS WAS LAST YEAR, MY TEACHER CALLED ME TO ANSWER ON A QUESTION AND I GOT IT WRONG, AND HE LAUGHED AT ME WHEN THE CLASS STARTED TO LAUGH.
I FELT HORRIBLE INSIDE, NOT ONLY DO I STRUGGLE, BUT EVERYONE AROUND ME IS LAUGHING AT ME FOR STRUGGLING.
THIS MADE ME SO SCARED AND NERVOUS TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL.
I KNOW YOU MAY HEARD PARENTS TALK ABOUT VISION THERAPY AND IT MAY NOT SEEM LIKE A BIG DEAL, BUT IT IS FOR KIDS LIKE ME.
I NEED HELP SO I CAN DO MY BEST IN SCHOOL AND NOT FALL BEHIND MORE THAN I AM.
I HOPE YOU ALL CAN HELP ME BECAUSE WHEN OUR EYES WORK BETTER WE DO BETTER IN SCHOOL AND LIFE.
>> JUST REAL FAST. I APOLOGIZE.
I'M NOT GOING TO SAY ANYTHING OF SUBSTANCE, BUT I JUST WANT TO SAY I THINK YOU'RE AN INCREDIBLY BRAVE YOUNG LADY.
IT TAKES A LOT TO SPEAK IN FRONT OF PEOPLE, AND I THINK YOU DEFINITELY SHOWED A LOT OF POISE AND BRAVERY.
SO JUST MY OPINION, BUT I THINK ALL OF US HAVE THE SAME OPINION.
>> THAT'S GREATLY APPRECIATED, SIR. I'M KAYLEE'S FATHER.
I WANTED TO SPEAK AS A FATHER WHO KNOWS FIRSTHAND WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE A KID WITH A DISABILITY IN THIS VERY DISTRICT.
I WENT TO BONITA SCHOOLS AND I STRUGGLED AND I STRUGGLED WITH LEARNING.
I STRUGGLED WITH LEARNING AND TO KEEP UP WITH READING.
I STRUGGLED WITH FRUSTRATION KNOWING THAT I COULD DO MORE, BUT I DID NOT HAVE THE RIGHT SERVICES.
THE SCHOOL PUSHED FOR AN ADD DIAGNOSIS BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT THEY DO. GUESS WHAT? THE DOCTORS PRESCRIBED ME [INAUDIBLE] TODAY ON BRAIN DAMAGED.
INSTEAD OF THE SCHOOL HELPING ME, I WAS TOSSED ASIDE AND LABELED AND PUSHED INTO THE MOST RESTRICTIVE ENVIRONMENT THAT DID NOT ADDRESS MY ACTUAL NEEDS.
THE EXPERIENCE LEFT ME BEHIND ACADEMICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY.
IT BECAME TOO MUCH FOR ME TO HANDLE.
I DON'T WANT MY DAUGHTER TO GO THROUGH WHAT I DID.
I WANT HER TO FEEL LIKE SHE IS ENOUGH AND NOT BEING THROWN AWAY.
BECAUSE THE SYSTEM WON'T PROVIDE HER WITH THE PROPER RELATED SERVICES, THE DISTRICT APPROACH OF INCREASING ACCOMMODATIONS AND RESTRICTING HER LEARNING ENVIRONMENT IS EXACTLY WHAT WAS DONE TO ME, AND IT'S NOT THE ANSWER.
SHE NEEDS A CHANCE TO SUCCEED, NOT JUST TO DEAL WITH IT LIKE I HAD TO.
WHY IS THE DISTRICT REPEATING THE SAME MISTAKES? WE KNOW WHAT KAYLEE NEEDS, AND IT IS THE RELATED SERVICES OF VISION THERAPY TO IMPROVE HER VISION IMPAIRMENTS AND GIVE HER THE SAME OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN LIKE HER PEERS.
I AM STANDING HERE AS A FATHER WHO KNOWS THE COST OF BEING IGNORED, AND I AM ASKING YOU TO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE WITH MY DAUGHTER.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH. [APPLAUSE]
>> HI, I'M NICOLE, AND I'VE BEEN A LIFELONG RESIDENT.
I HAVE BEEN GOING IN CIRCLES WITH THE DISTRICT FIGHTING TO GET A SIMPLE MATTER RESOLVED AND HAVE BEEN UNSUCCESSFUL, NOT TO MENTION BEYOND FRUSTRATED.
MY DAUGHTER, KAYLEE HAS ENTERED THE DISTRICT WITH A DOCUMENTED VISION IMPAIRMENT.
YET DESPITE THE COUNTLESS EFFORTS, THE DISTRICT SEEMS UNWILLING TO PROVIDE THE NECESSARY RELATED SERVICES.
KAYLEE'S VISION IMPAIRMENTS ARE NOT MINOR.
SHE IS DEALING WITH CONVERGENCE INSUFFICIENCY,
[00:50:03]
ACCOMMODATIVE IN FACILITY, VERGENCE IN FACILITY, WORKING MEMORY DEFICITS, RETAIN PRIMITIVE REFLEXES, MAGNOCELLULAR VISION DEFICITS, VISION ALIASING, INTERMITTENT CENTRAL SUPPRESSION, DECODING DEFICITS, DYSPHONETIC DYSLEXIA, FUNCTIONAL AWARENESS, KINETIC COLOR VISUAL FIELDS DEFICITS, DISREGULATED VAGUS NERVE.THESE ISSUES CAUSE REAL MEASURABLE DIFFICULTIES EVERY SINGLE DAY, INCLUDING DOUBLE VISION WHEN READING OR DOING CLOSE WORK, EYE DISCOMFORT AND FATIGUE DURING NEAR TASK.
HEADACHES OR MIGRAINES FROM CLOSE WORK, DIFFICULTY CONCENTRATING ON READING OR OTHER NEAR ACTIVITIES.
SLOW READING AND SIGNIFICANT STRUGGLES WITH PHONOLOGICAL PROCESSING.
DESPITE ALL OF THIS, THE DISTRICT DOES NOT SEEM TO BELIEVE THAT RESOLVING KAYLEE'S VISION ISSUES ARE RELEVANT TO HER EDUCATION.
INSTEAD OF PROVIDING APPROPRIATE RELATED SERVICE, THE RESPONSE HAS BEEN TO INCREASE HER ACCOMMODATIONS AND PLACE HER IN THE MOST RESTRICTIVE ENVIRONMENT POSSIBLE.
THIS APPROACH IS NOT A SOLUTION.
IT'S A BAND AID THAT IGNORES THE ROOT PROBLEM.
WHY IS THE DISTRICT PLAYING A GAME OF KEEP AWAY WITH THE SERVICES THAT WOULD TRULY HELP MY DAUGHTER? WHY ARE YOU FORCING HER TO SUFFER WHEN THERE ARE SOLUTIONS THAT COULD ALLOW HER TO THRIVE? KAYLEE DESERVES THE SAME OPPORTUNITIES AS HER PEERS, BUT SHE CANNOT ACHIEVE THAT WITHOUT VISION THERAPY.
IT IS TIME TO STOP DELAYING AND GIVE KAYLEE THE RELATED SERVICES SHE NEEDS TO SUCCEED.
SHE HAS BEEN LABELED AS LAZY AND UNMOTIVATED BY STAFF AT THIS DISTRICT AND IT'S DISHEARTENING AND DEMORALIZING BECAUSE SHE'S NEITHER OF THOSE.
THE TRUTH IS SHE'S FIGHTING BATTLE, YOU CAN'T SEE, AND SHE NEEDS THIS RELATED SERVICE.
AS SOME OF YOU HAD SAID UP HERE TODAY, THAT YOU WANT ALL STUDENTS TO SUCCEED, I HOPE SHE CAN BE ONE.
>> GOOD EVENING. MY NAME IS SHANDA ELLSWORTH, AND I'M THE OWNER OF SHANDA E HOLISTIC.
FOR 25 YEARS, I'VE SERVED WORKING WITH SPECIAL EDUCATION 20 YEARS AS A BEHAVIOR SUPERVISOR, WHERE I WORKED WITH PEOPLE THAT SERVED UNDER LOVOS AT UCLA.
MOST RECENTLY, THREE YEARS AGO, I STARTED MY COMPANY TO BE ABLE TO WRITE COMPREHENSIVE SERVICES FOR FAMILIES, EDUCATIONAL CONSULTATION, AS WELL AS SPECIAL EDUCATION ADVOCACY.
MOST RECENTLY, I MET THE JANSEN FAMILY, AND THEY CAME TO ME AND EXPLAINED THE PROBLEMS THAT THEY WERE HAVING.
WE'VE GONE THROUGH ONE IEP AND MOM HAS MENTIONED WHAT I WAS GOING TO MENTION, SO I DON'T WANT TO REPEAT MYSELF.
ANYTIME A CHILD HAS A LEARNING BARRIER, THE FOUNDATIONAL ASSESSMENT IS DEVELOPMENTAL VISION, OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY, AND CENTRAL AUDITORY PROCESSING DISORDER.
KAYLEE CAME INTO THIS DISTRICT WITH A VISION IMPAIRMENT.
THERE ARE RELATED SERVICES UNDER THE CALIFORNIA EDUCATIONAL CODE.
IDA ALSO STATES THAT THESE SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE.
WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE RECORDS THAT I HAVE REVIEWED AND THE TREATMENT OF THE MOTHER IN THE IP HAVE BEEN DISHEARTENING.
IT'S NOT OKAY. RIGHT NOW, I'M ASKING THE DISTRICT OR THE BOARD TO GRANT THE RELATED SERVICES FOR KAYLEE.
MY OWN CHILDREN ARE GETTING VISION THERAPY.
IT'S A STRUGGLE. THERE'S NO REASON FOR THIS CHILD TO GO THROUGH THIS.
THERE'S NO REASON TO GIVE HER A BUNCH OF ACCOMMODATIONS AND GIVE HER THE MOST RESTRICTIVE ENVIRONMENT.
SHE NEEDS THE RELATED SERVICES AND GOING THROUGH THIS FOR FOUR YEARS WHEN THE DISTRICT WAS ON NOTICE WHEN SHE CAME IN IN FIRST GRADE, IT'S ALREADY BEEN THREE, FOUR YEARS.
AGAIN, I ASK YOU TO GIVE THE RELATED SERVICE FOR HER BECAUSE SHE SHOULDN'T BE SUFFERING. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
[APPLAUSE] LET ME PASS THIS OUT TO YOU GUYS.
IT BREAKS DOWN WHAT SHE EXPERIENCES [INAUDIBLE] THANK YOU SO MUCH.
>> HELLO. I JUST WANTED TO SPEAK ON BEHALF OF THE JANSEN FAMILY.
I'M 17-YEARS-OLD, AND I'VE BEEN GOING THROUGH VISION THERAPY FOR ABOUT TWO YEARS NOW, AND I WANTED TO SPEAK ON MY EXPERIENCES THAT I HAD BEFORE.
I'VE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH CENTRAL AUDITORY PROCESSING DISORDER, MEANING THAT IT'S HARDER FOR ME TO HEAR, AND IT'S BEEN A REALLY HARD STRUGGLE FOR ME BECAUSE, GOING THROUGH MIDDLE SCHOOL AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, I HAD BEEN LABELED AS SOMEONE WHO WAS LAZY AND SOMEONE WHO DIDN'T REALLY DO THEIR WORK VERY MUCH WHEN I HAD BEEN TRYING YEARS AFTER YEARS AND YET TO NO AVAIL, I COULDN'T REALLY GET THE SAME RESULTS THAT I HAD BEEN EXPECTING.
[00:55:04]
I'M REALLY GRATEFUL THAT MY MOM HAS BEEN ABLE TO ADVOCATE FOR ME AND BEEN THIS PERSON THAT CAN ADVOCATE FOR OTHERS AS WELL BECAUSE JUST FRANKLY, I DON'T KNOW WHAT I WOULD HAVE DONE WITHOUT HER.I'M GLAD THAT I'M ABLE TO GET MY VISION THERAPY NOW AND THAT I'M ABLE TO HAVE MY GRADES BE MUCH HIGHER NOW BECAUSE AS SOMEONE WHO'S IN 12TH GRADE ALREADY, YOU GUYS KNOW MORE THAN ANYONE HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO BE ABLE TO HAVE THOSE GRADES UP AND BE READY FOR SUCCESS.
ALL I'M ASKING FOR YOU TODAY IS THAT YOU'RE ABLE TO GIVE KAYLEE THE ACCOMMODATIONS THAT SHE NEEDS AND BEING ABLE TO SUPPORT HER THROUGH THIS HARD TIME BECAUSE MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE, I KNOW THAT SHE IS STRUGGLING. THANK YOU.
>> THANK YOU, MAYA. [APPLAUSE] PETER ATWOOD.
>> WELL, GOOD EVENING. I'M A SPECIAL ED ADVOCATE, AND BLINDING ONE EYE I CAN'T REALLY SEE OUT OF THE OTHER, SO [NOISE] SOMEBODY IS GOING TO WONDER WHY I DIDN'T GET WORK DONE BUT WELL, I'M 73-YEARS-OLD, SO I GUESS IT'S A LITTLE LATE FOR ME.
BUT ANYWAY, THERE'S A LOT OF RESISTANCE TO WORKING IN KAYLEE'S VISION PROBLEMS. I WANT TO ADDRESS A FEW THINGS.
FIRST OF, THE VISION THERAPY IN PARTICULAR IS A RELATED SERVICE.
IT SITS IN THE CALIFORNIA REGULATIONS, IT'S FIVE CCR 3051.75, IF ANYBODY WANTS TO KNOW AND THE REASON FOR IT IS IT'S LOW HANGING FRUIT.
IF YOU CAN'T SEE PROPERLY, AND I'M NOT TALKING THAT BY SEEING LITTLE LETTERS ON A BOARD, I'M TALKING ABOUT THE BRAIN BEING ABLE TO USE THEIR EYES RIGHT.
IT'S LIKE IF YOU'RE A MECHANIC AND YOU HAVE GOOD TOOLS, THAT'S NOT GOING TO PERSUADE ANYBODY THAT YOU CAN FIX THE CAR NECESSARILY.
GOD KNOWS NEEDS TO KNOW HOW TO USE.
BRAIN NEEDS TO KNOW HOW TO USE THE EYES PROPERLY, NEEDS TO KNOW HOW TO CONVERGE PROPERLY, NEEDS TO BE ABLE TO TRACK PROPERLY, ALL THOSE KINDS OF THINGS GETS REALLY OLD IF YOU KEEP LOSING YOUR PLACE, RE READING LINES AND SO ON AND SO FORTH, ALL DAY LONG WHEN YOU'RE TRYING TO READ, AND WHEN YOU GET FRONTAL HEADACHES AND YOU JUST GET EXHAUSTED.
ALL OF THAT STUFF MAKES IT HARD TO READ.
IF YOU CAN'T READ EASILY AND WELL, AND IF YOU DON'T FEEL LIKE DOING IT, THEN IT'S GOING TO BE DISASTROUS.
YOU CAN GET A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA, AND GET GOOD GRADES AND EVERYTHING, BUT YOU GET OUT OF HERE AND YOU CAN'T READ OR YOU DON'T WANT TO READ, IT'S GOING TO BE DISASTROUS.
IF YOU'RE GOING TO READ EASILY AND WELL, NOT MUCH ELSE MATTERS.
YOU'LL LEARN. IT'S CRITICAL TO TAKE CARE OF THIS.
IN EDUCATION, IT SEEMS HARD FOR PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND THAT IF YOU CAN'T SEE PROPERLY, THEY'RE PROBABLY GOING TO HAVE TROUBLE READING.
I DON'T KNOW WHY THAT SHOULD BE DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND, BUT IT IS.
SO ANYWAY, THIS IS WHAT'S HAPPENED TO KAYLEE FOR YEARS.
IT HAPPENS TO KIDS ALL THE TIME.
I'M SUGGESTING THAT HERE, THIS IS LOW HANGING FRUIT.
IT'S EASY TO FIX THIS KIND OF A PROBLEM AND YOU LIKE THE RESULTS WHEN YOU DO.
I'M THINKING OF ONE SCHOOL DISTRICT, THEY DIDN'T WANT TO FIX THESE PROBLEMS. WE WANTED $8,000 WORTH OF VISION THERAPY, $460,000 SECTION 504 HEARING, AND THEN WE WENT IDEA.
THEY FINALLY SETTLED UP, SO THEY GOT OUT OF THAT FOR $100,000.
THERE'S $92,000 THAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER SPENT.
I'D LIKE YOU GUYS NOT TO FOLLOW THAT PATH.
IF YOU'D WORK WITH US, IF YOU'D WORK WITH THE KIDS ON THESE THINGS, YOU'LL LIKE THE RESULTS BETTER.
IT IS ALSO GOOD FOR THE KIDS SOCIALLY AND EMOTIONALLY.
I TALKED TO A LOT OF MOMS, AND WHEN BAREFOOT MOM WALKS INTO THE DARK ROOM SO THE DIVISION DOESN'T WORK THAT WELL AND SHE KNOWS HIS LEGS ON THE FLOOR, SHE'S TWITCHING.
SHE TURNS THE LIGHT ON SO HER VISUAL SYSTEM CAN WORK, NOW SHE RELAXES.
THAT'S THE IMPORTANCE OF VISION AND NOT BEING AT THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT ALL IS IN FIGHTER FLIGHT ALL THE TIME.
A RELIABLE VISUAL SYSTEM AVOIDS A LOT OF EMOTIONAL PROBLEMS. THAT'S WHY I HOPE THAT YOU GUYS LOOK INTO THAT AND IF WE WANT TO NEED TO TALK FURTHER, HERE I AM.
THE NEXT REGULAR BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING WILL BE NOVEMBER 6TH, 2024.
[19. FUTURE MEETING DATES]
DO WE HAVE ANY OTHER ITEMS FOR OUR FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS?[NOISE]
