GOOD EVENING. SUPERINTENDENT WIEN, BOARD PRESIDENT, PRESIDENT CREIMAN, SCHOOL BOARD, EXECUTIVE, CABINET AND AUDIENCE.

OCTOBER WAS QUITE A BUSY MONTH FOR THE BEARCATS.

[00:05:01]

OUR FOOTBALL TEAM HAS BEEN DOING VERY WELL WITH MANY WINS UNDER OUR BELT THIS MONTH.

OUR HOMECOMING GAME WAS A HUGE 49 SIX WIN OVER SIERRA VISTA.

ON OCTOBER 19TH WE HAD A PURPLE OUT FOOTBALL GAME IN HONOR OF COACH ANGELOTTI AND ALL OTHER CANCER SURVIVORS AND FIGHTERS.

WE ALSO WILL BE PLAYING OUR FIRST ROUND OF CIF AT GLEN DAVIS STADIUM THIS FRIDAY, AND OUR TRADITIONAL TAILGATE BEFORE AT 6 P.M.

THANK YOU. OKAY, ON TO OUR FEATURED PRESENTATIONS.

[13. FEATURED PRESENTATIONS (Part 1 of 2)]

OUR FIRST WILL BE GRACE MILLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, THE NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON AWARD WINNER.

ALL RIGHT.

THANK YOU. I'D LIKE TO HAVE THE STAFF THAT IS HERE FROM GRACE MILLER.

COME ON UP TO THE FRONT AND STAND TO BE RECOGNIZED.

PLENTY OF ROOM IN THE CENTER.

SO THE NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON SCHOOLS PROGRAM RECOGNIZES SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY THAT SHOW OVERALL ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE.

GRACE MILLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED BY THE US DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AS A 2023 NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL.

CELEBRATING GRACE MILLER'S OUTSTANDING EFFORTS IN MAINTAINING HIGH LEVELS OF STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT FOR ALL STUDENTS.

GRACE MILLER IS THE SECOND BONITA UNIFIED SCHOOL TO ACHIEVE THIS HONOR, JOINING SCHOLL AS RECIPIENTS OF THIS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD.

BY WINNING THIS AWARD, GRACE MILLER IS IN ELITE COMPANY.

NATIONALLY, ONLY 353 SCHOOLS WON NATIONAL BLUE RIBBONS.

THAT'S OUT OF APPROXIMATELY 131,000 TOTAL SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY, AND ONLY 33 SCHOOLS IN CALIFORNIA WON THAT AWARD.

GRACE MILLER HAS AN INCREDIBLE REPUTATION THROUGHOUT OUR DISTRICT, AND I ASK A NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN OUR DISTRICT TO DESCRIBE WHAT THEY OBSERVE ABOUT GRACE MILLER, AND THIS IS WHAT THEY SAID. FIRST PERSON STATED THAT WHEN HE WALKS ONTO THE CAMPUS, IT FEELS CALM AND SERENE AND THAT WHAT IS IMMEDIATELY NOTICEABLE IS THE OVER 400 SMILING STUDENT FACES AND 40 SMILING STAFF MEMBERS.

ANOTHER PERSON STATED THAT GRACE MILLER FEELS LIKE HOME, AND BECAUSE OF THAT, IT'S A PLACE THAT MAKES CONNECTING WITH OTHERS EASY.

THE NEXT STATED THAT GRACE MILLER IS A SPECIAL PLACE BECAUSE OF THEIR CULTURE.

SHE SAID THAT GRACE MILLER ENCOUNTERS THE SAME TYPES OF CHALLENGES THAT ALL SCHOOLS FACE, BUT WHAT SETS THEM APART IS THAT THEY CONSISTENTLY REFLECT ON WHAT THEY CAN DO TO IMPROVE THE SITUATION.

AND THE FOURTH PERSON SUMMED IT UP BEST WHEN THEY SAID, GRACE MILLER IS TRULY A SCHOOL FOR EVERYONE.

OUR VISION IN BONITA UNIFIED IS TO LEAD ALL COMPREHENSIVE DISTRICTS IN THE REGION, AND THE WORK THAT GRACE MILLER DOES ON A DAILY BASIS EMBODIES THIS VISION AND IS A SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTOR TO MAKING THIS A REALITY.

LESLIE, COME UP TO THIS PODIUM, PLEASE.

SO FOR DEMONSTRATING EXCELLENCE AND FOR DEVELOPING EXCEPTIONALLY STRONG STUDENTS, WE WOULD LIKE TO PRESENT GRACE MILLER'S STAFF WITH BONITA HIGHEST AWARD, THE BONITA PURPOSE AWARD.

ON BEHALF OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION EXECUTIVE CABINET, PLEASE ACCEPT THIS PURPOSE AWARD GIVEN TO SIGNIFY YOUR COMMITMENT TO OUR CORE VALUES.

[00:10:07]

NOW THE AWARD IS NOT ONLY CELEBRATED WITHIN THE DISTRICT, IT'S ALSO CELEBRATED BY THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE.

AND FIRST, I'D LIKE TO RECOGNIZE THAT CITY OF LA VERNE WILL HONOR GRACE MILLER ON MONDAY'S NOVEMBER 6TH COUNCIL MEETING, AND SO WE'LL ALL BE THERE FOR THAT.

BUT NEXT WE HAVE MARCO LUNDGREN REPRESENTING SENATOR PORTANTINO OFFICE TO COME TO THE PODIUM.

WELL, THANK YOU, SUPERINTENDENT WIEN.

MY NAME IS MARCO. I REPRESENT SENATOR ANTHONY PORTANTINO AND, YOU KNOW, I WAS LOOKING THROUGH THE CERTIFICATES THAT WE TYPICALLY MAKE FOR ORGANIZATIONS.

AND I REMEMBER LAST YEAR, SO SHULL GOT HONORED LAST OCTOBER.

AND SO, YOU KNOW, TWO CONSECUTIVE YEARS IN A ROW, BONITA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT HAS TWO SCHOOLS THAT ARE BEING NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED, WHICH I THINK REALLY SAYS IS A TESTAMENT TO WHAT YOU GUYS ARE ALL DOING WITHIN THE DISTRICT, AS WELL AS THAT, THE SCHOOL BOARD LEVEL AND, YOU KNOW, KIND OF THE DISTRICT AT LARGE.

SO THE SENATOR IS A STRONG PROPONENT OF PUBLIC EDUCATION, WOULD LIKE TO RECOGNIZE YOU GUYS.

AND SO I HAVE THIS CERTIFICATE FROM SENATOR PORTANTINO AS JUST A SMALL TOKEN OF HIS APPRECIATION FOR WHAT YOU GUYS DO FOR OUR STUDENTS.

THANK YOU. AND NEXT WE HAVE MATT LYONS REPRESENTING ASSEMBLY MEMBER CHRIS HOLDEN'S OFFICE.

WELL, FIRST OFF, THESE ARE THE MEETINGS I LOVE SHOWING UP TO.

YOU KNOW, I WAS GOING TO CITE ONE OF MY FAVORITE BOOKS, THE LITTLE ENGINE THAT COULD BECAUSE AS A FORMER GRACE MILLER PARENT, I ALWAYS LIKENED GRACE MILLER TO THAT LITTLE ENGINE THAT COULD.

IT WILL NEVER BE THE BIGGEST SCHOOL WITH THE LARGEST POPULATION, BUT I ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT WE COULD BE THE BEST.

WAY BACK WHEN, WHEN MY SON WAS A KINDERGARTEN STUDENT ALL THE WAY UP TO FIFTH GRADE, AND YOU HAVE PROVEN THAT EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU HAVE PROVEN THAT YOU ARE THE BEST OF THE BEST, AND YOU ARE A SHINING LIGHT TO ALL OF THOSE OTHER SCHOOLS NATIONWIDE THAT EVEN THE SMALLEST SCHOOLS.

YOU MAY NOT BE THE BIGGEST IN A DISTRICT, BUT WITH THE RIGHT PEOPLE DOING THE RIGHT THINGS ON A DAILY BASIS, WITH THE STUDENTS FOCUSED ON EXCELLENCE, YOU ACHIEVE THESE TYPES OF RECOGNITION.

SO, YOU KNOW, IT'S GREAT TO BE HERE.

ON BEHALF OF CALIFORNIA STATE ASSEMBLY MEMBER, CONGRATULATIONS.

AND ON BEHALF OF THE ENTIRE STATE LEGISLATURE, I'M ABLE TO PROVIDE YOU WITH THIS SMALL TOKEN OF OUR APPRECIATION, AND HOPEFULLY YOU'LL HAVE A WALL THAT YOU CAN PUT UP ALL OF THESE WONDERFUL PIECES OF RECOGNITION.

SO FURTHER, WE HAVE A CERTIFICATE FROM US REPRESENTATIVE GRACE NAPOLITANO'S OFFICE, SO WE'LL PRESENT YOU WITH THAT AND LA COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS KATHRYN BARGER ALSO SENT THIS CERTIFICATE COMMEMORATING THE AWARD AND THAT IS OFFICIALLY THE END OF THE PRESENTATION.

SO DON'T GO ANYWHERE. WE'RE GOING TO TAKE A PICTURE.

[INAUDIBLE] . AND BEFORE WE GO ON TO OUR NEXT FEATURED PRESENTATION, WE'RE GOING TO JUMP BACK ON AND HEAR FROM OUR THIRD STUDENT, REPRESENTATIVE RYLIE KOSCIELSKI

[12. COMMUNICATIONS FROM STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES (Part 2 of 2)]

IN CASE OF NON AGENDA ITEMS, COMMENTS MAY BE MADE UNDER REQUEST TO SPEAK ON NON AGENDA ITEMS COMMUNICATIONS FROM THE PUBLIC.

IF ANY MEMBER OF THE BOARD SO REQUESTS, AN ITEM SHALL BE REMOVED FROM THIS SECTION AND PLACED IN THE REGULAR ORDER OF BUSINESS.

SECOND? SECOND. ANY DISCUSSION? ALL IN FAVOR? AYE.

OPPOSED? OKAY.

OUR ACTION AGENDA.

[16. DISCUSSION/ACTION AGENDA]

FIRST ITEM HUMAN RESOURCES CONDUCT A PUBLIC HEARING OF THE INITIAL PROPOSALS FOR NEGOTIATIONS BETWEEN BONITA UNIFIED TEACHERS ASSOCIATION AND BONITA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR THE 2023 SCHOOL YEAR.

THE PUBLIC HEARING IS NOW OPEN AT 6:28.

GOOD EVENING. IN ACCORDANCE WITH SECTION 3547 OF THE EDUCATIONAL EMPLOYMENT RELATIONS ACT, [INAUDIBLE] AND THE DISTRICT ARE SUBMITTING THEIR INITIAL PROPOSALS TO OPEN NEGOTIATIONS. SOMETIMES THESE PROPOSALS ARE REFERRED TO AS SUNSHINE BARGAINING PROPOSALS, BECAUSE THEY SHED A LIGHT ON A BARGAINING PROCESS THAT IS NOT GENERALLY CONDUCTED IN THE PUBLIC EYE. SUNSHINE PROPOSALS ALLOW ANYONE WHO IS INTERESTED TO KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON IN THE PUBLICLY FUNDED SCHOOL DISTRICT.

WHILE THE SUNSHINE PROPOSALS ARE WRITTEN IN VERY BROAD TERMS, THEY WILL BE SPELLED OUT IN GREATER SPECIFICITY AND DETAIL BY THE BARGAINING TEAMS DURING NEGOTIATIONS FOLLOWING THE PUBLIC HEARING, THE BOARD WILL NEED TO CONSIDER ADOPTING BOTH PROPOSALS.

ANY DISCUSSION? OKAY, THEN OUR HEARING IS CLOSED AT 6:29.

ITEM NUMBER TWO IS ADOPT THE INITIAL PROPOSALS FOR THE NEGOTIATIONS BETWEEN BONITA TEACHERS ASSOCIATION AND BONITA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR THE 2023-2024 SCHOOL YEAR. I'LL MOVE THAT.

[00:30:01]

SECOND. ANY DISCUSSION? ALL IN FAVOR? AYE.

OPPOSED? OKAY.

NOW, THIS IS GOING TO SOUND REAL FAMILIAR, BUT ADOPT THE INITIAL PROPOSALS FOR NEGOTIATIONS BETWEEN THE BONITA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT AND THE BONITA UNIFIED TEACHERS ASSOCIATION FOR THE 2023-2024 SCHOOL YEAR.

I'LL MOVE. SECOND.

ANY DISCUSSION? ALL IN FAVOR? AYE. OPPOSED.

MOTION CARRIES.

OKAY. SUPERINTENDENT? APPROVED.

FIRST AMENDMENT TO EMPLOYEE AGREEMENTS FOR THE ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OF BUSINESS SERVICES, EDUCATIONAL SERVICES AND HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT.

WE HAVE A MOTION. SO MOVE.

SECOND. OKAY, SO LAST MONTH, BOARD APPROVED ADDITIONAL SALARY INCREASE OF 2.5% FOR CLASSIFIED, CERTIFICATED AND MANAGEMENT EMPLOYEES.

THIS ITEM APPLIES THAT ADDITIONAL 2.5% TO OUR THREE ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENTS TO ALIGN WITH ALL OTHER MANAGEMENT EMPLOYEES.

ANY DISCUSSION? ALL IN FAVOR? AYE.

OPPOSED? OKAY.

REPORTS FROM MEMBERS OF THE BOARD AND THE SUPERINTENDENT.

[17. REPORTS FROM MEMBERS OF THE BOARD AND SUPERINTENDENT]

LET'S START WITH CHRIS ANN TONIGHT.

GOOD EVENING.

THIS LAST WEEK ON MONDAY, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD WERE ABLE TO GO TO MOUNT SAC.

AND WE MET WITH THEIR NEW PRESIDENT.

SHE GAVE US A WONDERFUL PRESENTATION.

AND FOR ME, I HAD NOT BEEN ON THE CAMPUS.

I HAD DRIVEN THROUGH IT MANY TIMES, AND I WAS SO IMPRESSED BY THE WONDERFUL NEW BUILDINGS THAT THEY'VE BEEN ABLE TO PUT IN WITH THE SUPPORT OF BOND MEASURES THAT THEY'VE HAD, AND ALSO JUST THE ENTIRE PRESENTATION, THEIR AWARD WINNING PROGRAMS THEY HAVE THERE, AND THEY ARE REALLY THERE TO MEET THE NEEDS OF OUR COMMUNITY.

SO JUST OVERALL IMPRESSED WITH WHAT MOUNT SAC HAS TO OFFER OUR STUDENTS HERE IN BONITA UNIFIED.

SECONDLY, I WAS REALLY SO HAPPY TO SEE GRACE MILLER HERE.

I JUST KNOW THAT IT TAKES YEARS OF EFFORT TO BE ABLE TO BECOME A BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL, AND THOSE TEACHERS HAVE ALL MY ADMIRATION.

ANOTHER THING I WANTED TO BRING UP TONIGHT ON THE CONSENT AGENDA.

EVERY MONTH WE GET A LIST OF THE OVERNIGHT FIELD TRIPS AND WE APPROVE THEM.

AND I JUST WANT TO SAY, I'M SO IMPRESSED BY OUR PARENTS IN THIS COMMUNITY.

THEY SO SUPPORT OUR BAND, OUR CHORUS AND OUR SPORTS PROGRAMS. THE BOOSTERS DO A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF FUNDRAISING AND SUPPORT FOR THOSE STUDENTS.

JUST IN TONIGHT'S WHAT WE APPROVED, THERE WERE WRESTLING TOURNAMENTS AND THESE KIDS ARE GOING AROUND THE STATE AND EVEN OUT OF STATE.

ONE OF OUR TEAMS IS GOING TO HAWAII FOR A TOURNAMENT.

SO JUST KUDOS TO ALL THE PARENTS OUT THERE THAT MAKE THESE WONDERFUL EXPERIENCES HAPPEN FOR THE STUDENTS.

ALSO, I NOTICED THAT WE ALSO APPROVED TONIGHT A THE PURCHASE OF TEST HOUND AND IMAGINE LEARNING, AND THOSE TWO SYSTEMS WILL BE THERE TO SUPPORT OUR ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS HERE IN THE DISTRICT AND HOPEFULLY ALSO GET SOME GOOD DATA TO HONE IN ON WHAT THEIR NEEDS ARE AND HOW WE CAN HELP THEM GROW AND TEST HOUND I SEE IS ALSO GOING TO BE USED TO SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS THAT HAVE NEED SPECIALIZED SERVICES.

SO JUST KUDOS TO ED SERVICES FOR GETTING THOSE THINGS ONTO THE AGENDA IN THE BOARD TONIGHT.

WE ALSO APPROVED RECOGNIZING OCTOBER 23RD THROUGH 31ST AS RED RIBBON WEEK.

YOU COULD SEE THAT HAPPENING ON THE CAMPUSES THIS LAST WEEK IF YOU DROVE BY OUR SCHOOLS.

AND WE ARE ALSO RECOGNIZING NOVEMBER AS NATIONAL NATIVE AMERICAN MONTH AND AS THE NATIONAL YOUTH HOMELESS AWARENESS MONTH.

AND THOSE ARE JUST REALLY VERY NICE RESOLUTIONS AND THE PRACTICAL PIECES OF IT, THOUGH JUST ONE EXAMPLE WOULD BE TONIGHT WE APPROVED THE USE OF SOME FUNDS TO HELP BRING ONE OF OUR HOMELESS STUDENTS WHO'S DISPLACED NOW AND NOT NEAR BONITA UNIFIED.

IT PAYS FOR THE HALF THE TRANSPORTATION TO BRING THAT CHILD BACK TO SCHOOL HERE AS LONG AS THEY REMAIN HOMELESS.

SO AGAIN, KUDOS TO THE DISTRICT FOR THE GREAT WORK THAT YOU ARE DOING.

THERE WE GO.

WE'RE GOING THIS DIRECTION, GOING THAT WAY THIS TIME.

GOT IT. GOOD EVENING, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.

THANK YOU AGAIN FOR THE LA VERNE SAN DIMAS EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATIONS, INVESTMENT AND SUPPORT WITH THEIR MANY GRANTS FOR OUR CLASSROOM TEACHERS THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT.

YOU KNOW, EARLIER LAST MONTH AT THE SAN DIMAS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE EVENT ON OCTOBER 7TH, I WAS PLEASED TO CONNECT WITH ANTHONY MORENO, WITH SENATOR RUBIO'S OFFICE AND WITH SOME OLD FRIENDS OVER LA VERNE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

[00:35:01]

TASTE OF LA VERNE.

SENATOR RUBIO, AS YOU KNOW WITH REDISTRICTING, IS NEW TO THE SAN DIMAS PART OF OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT.

AND WE'LL GET TO KNOW HER A LITTLE BIT BETTER.

LOOKING FORWARD TO PARTNERING WITH SHERRY BEST AND THE LA VERNE HISTORICAL SOCIETY'S NEW POCKET MUSEUM PROJECT, A REALLY CLEVER AND LOOK FORWARD TO LEARNING MORE ABOUT THAT AND HOW THAT CAN CONNECT WITH THE DISTRICT.

LOOKING FORWARD TO OUR CONTINUING DIALOG IN THE COMING MONTHS WITH THE DISTRICT'S FACILITIES MASTER PLAN AND NEEDS ASSESSMENT, AND HOW THEY MAY INTERSECT WITH FUTURE POSSIBILITIES THIS MONDAY, AS CHRIS ANN JUST MENTIONED, WE HAD A CHANCE TO MEET MOUNT SAN ANTONIO COLLEGE'S NEW PRESIDENT, DR.

GARCIA, TO THEIR STUDENT SERVICES CENTER AND RENEW OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH MOUNT SAN ANTONIO COLLEGE.

TALK FURTHER ABOUT DUAL ENROLLMENT OUTREACH AND TALK FURTHER ABOUT FUTURE PARTNERSHIPS AND POSSIBILITIES AND ON THE HEELS OF THE RECOGNITION IN EDUCATION, THE ANNUAL BLUE RED RIBBON WEEK ACROSS OUR DISTRICT, WHICH FOCUSES ON SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION.

I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO SCHEDULING ANOTHER FENTANYL AWARENESS AND EDUCATION SESSION FOR OUR PARENTS AND COMMUNITY.

WE KNOW THAT IT SAVES LIVES I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO NOW MATT, I UNDERSTAND JANUARY 25TH, 23RD FOR OUR NEXT DISTRICT ROUNDTABLE.

TENTATIVELY, YES.

LOOKING FORWARD TO SO MANY OF OUR STUDENT PERFORMANCES AS WE HEAD INTO THE HOLIDAY SEASON.

IF YOU WANT TO REFRESH YOUR HEART AND SOUL, PLEASE ATTEND ONE OF THOSE OR MORE OF THOSE PERFORMANCES.

AND PLEASE REMEMBER OUR US ARMED FORCES VETERANS, PAST AND PRESENT.

NEXT SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 11TH, AS WE CELEBRATE, AS WE DO EACH YEAR ON THE 11TH DAY OF THE 11TH MONTH, VETERANS DAY.

AND PLEASE ENJOY A RESTFUL THANKSGIVING WEEK BREAK WITH YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

THANK YOU. SO TODAY I WAS ABLE TO TALK TO TWO PEOPLE ABOUT IT BEING NOVEMBER, AND I GOT A VERY INTERESTING RESPONSE.

I FIRST TALKED TO MY DAUGHTER.

I'M LIKE, IT'S NOVEMBER 1ST.

SHE'S LIKE, GREAT, I LOVE CHRISTMAS MOVIES.

AND I TALKED TO ANOTHER PERSON.

SHE'S LIKE, I LOVE CHRISTMAS MUSIC.

AND I AGREED WITH THOSE, BUT I JUST FEEL LIKE WE'RE SKIPPING A HOLIDAY.

SO JUST FOR EVERYONE OUT HERE AND EVERYONE WHO MAY BE LISTENING, ALL FIVE OF YOU, HAPPY THANKSGIVING.

IT'S A WONDERFUL HOLIDAY FOR HAPPY INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY AS WELL.

WE HAD AN AMAZING TIME AT MOUNT SAC, I THINK THERE WAS A DINNER THE BOARD WENT TO BEFORE.

THIS WAS VERY DIFFERENT.

WE HAD HONEST DIALOG.

IT WASN'T JUST, HERE'S A PRESENTATION, HERE'S SOME HORS D'OEUVRES, AND THAT'S IT.

IT REALLY WAS A BACK AND FORTH GETTING TO KNOW PEOPLE AND ACTUALLY BEING ABLE TO ASK REAL QUESTIONS AND REALLY DISCUSSING POLICIES.

SO I'M ASSUMING THAT HAS TO DO WITH THE AMAZING LEADERSHIP THEY HAVE AT MOUNT SAC.

AND JUST THEIR CAMPUS IS AMAZING.

THEY HAD FOR THE STUDENTS WHO NEED EXTRA SUPPORT.

THEY HAD, I THINK, 15 CENTERS FOR TUTORING.

AND THAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT FOR KIDS WHO NEED SUPPORT TO LEARN HOW TO BE GOOD STUDENTS.

WITH THE STUDENTS WHO ARE PLANNING TO GET TO A UC BUT COULDN'T GET IN THE TRADITIONAL PATHWAY, THEY HAD AN HONORS PROGRAM, AND THEY HAD A GOOD PATHWAY FOR THEM TO GET IN THERE.

SO THEY WERE REALLY A SCHOOL, A SCHOOL THAT FOCUSED ON EQUITY.

AND I THINK THEIR STUDENTS, ALL THEIR STUDENTS, WHETHER THEY'RE REMEDIAL STUDENTS OR STUDENTS GOING INTO CTE PATHWAYS OR STUDENTS WHO ARE TRANSFERRING IN AND GOING TO COLLEGE, MOUNT SAC HAD A LOT OF SUPPORTS FOR THEM.

I WOULD BE REMISS TO SAY THAT BONITA ALSO IS AN AMAZING SCHOOL THAT HAS A LOT OF SIMILAR SUPPORTS ALONG THE LINES OF EQUITY, AND I REALLY WANT TO TOUCH BASE WITH THAT.

AND I SHOULD ASK A QUESTION.

WE COULD TALK ABOUT TEST SCORES? CORRECT? OKAY.

SORRY. THAT'S RIGHT.

I'VE BEEN SITTING ON THIS PIECE OF PAPER, BUT I'D LIKE TO TALK TEST SCORES BECAUSE THEY'RE PHENOMENAL AND I DON'T AND SOMETIMES I THINK PEOPLE HAVE THE WRONG IMPRESSION ABOUT BONITA SCHOOLS.

I MEAN, IT HAS A GOOD REPUTATION.

I DON'T THINK IT HAS A GOOD ENOUGH REPUTATION.

SO THAT WOULD BE REALLY WHAT I'D LIKE TO TALK ABOUT.

SO THERE'S A LOT OF THINGS THAT ARE WORKING VERY WELL AT BONITA.

WE HAVE A PHENOMENAL AND I DON'T KNOW OF A BETTER MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM THAN THE PROGRAM WE HAVE AT BONITA.

IT IS AMAZING.

WE HAVE GREAT STAFF HERE.

SOME DISTRICTS DON'T ACTUALLY HAVE THEIR AIR CONDITIONING FIXED SO QUICKLY.

WE HAVE PRETTY ROBUST SUPPORTS THERE.

WE HAVE AN AMAZING WORLD CLASS READING PROGRAM AND WE WON MANY AWARDS FOR THIS READING PROGRAM.

[00:40:01]

OUR KIDS CAN READ VERY WELL AND WE HAVE A VERY GREAT MATH PROGRAM.

I MEAN, YOU GO DOWN THE LIST OF EVERYTHING A PARENT WOULD WANT IN A SCHOOL DISTRICT AND IT'S CHECK, CHECK, CHECK, CHECK, CHECK.

AND I KNOW FOR ME, WHEN MY WIFE AND I WERE LOOKING, THERE WERE SEVERAL DISTRICTS.

WE WERE LOOKING AT GLENDORA, CLAREMONT, SAN DIMAS, LA VERNE, WHICH IS BONITA, AND THERE WAS OTHER COUPLE AREAS TOO.

I WORK IN BALDWIN PARK, SO WE WERE LOOKING AT I GREW UP A LITTLE BIT IN HACIENDA HEIGHTS, SO THAT WAS A PLACE WALNUT.

THERE WERE CERTAIN AREAS WE WERE LOOKING AT AND WE FOUND A GREAT DEAL IN THE HOUSE HERE, AND WE COULD NOT HAVE BEEN MORE SATISFIED WITH THE EDUCATION OUR KIDS GET HERE.

THERE IS NOT ONE SINGLE SCHOOL THAT IS A BAD SCHOOL OR A SCHOOL.

YOU DON'T WANT TO SEND YOUR KID.

EVERY SINGLE SCHOOL HERE IS AN AMAZING SCHOOL THAT DOES AN AMAZING JOB.

SO TEST SCORES.

OH, ONE MORE THING.

WHEN 25 YEARS AGO, I HAD FRIENDS WHO LIVED HERE.

WHO SENT THEIR KIDS TO GLENDORA BECAUSE OF GLENDORA SCHOOLS.

THAT WAS THE REPUTATION.

DON'T SEND YOUR KIDS HERE TO BONITA.

SEND THEM TO GLENDORA.

AND I DIDN'T LOOK AT THE TEST SCORES 25 YEARS AGO, BUT I'VE HEARD PRESENTATIONS ON TEST SCORES EVERY YEAR SINCE I'VE BEEN ON THE BOARD.

SO I'M PRETTY MUCH SAYING 2019 UNTIL NOW IN COMPARISON TO THESE OTHER GREAT DISTRICTS.

THEY'RE SIMILAR IN POPULATION.

THEY DO REALLY GOOD WORK.

SO THIS IS IN NO WAY DISPARAGING TO GLENDORA OR CLAREMONT.

BUT WHEN I'M LOOKING HERE, EVERY SINGLE CATEGORY MATH AND READING FROM 2022 AND 2023.

BONITA HAS A HIGHER SCORE.

AND LET ME KIND OF GO OVER SOME OF THESE, BECAUSE I THINK SOMETIMES PEOPLE ARE LIKE, WE NEED TO SEND OUR KIDS ELSEWHERE.

IF YOU CAN SEND YOUR KIDS TO BONITA SCHOOLS, THIS REALLY IS WHERE YOU SHOULD SEND YOUR KIDS IF YOU CARE ABOUT THEIR EDUCATION, BECAUSE THERE ARE SOME PHENOMENAL WORK BEING DONE AND IT'S NOT A ONE YEAR BLIP, IT'S AT LEAST FIVE YEARS, IF NOT MORE SO.

THIS HAS BEEN CONSISTENT, HIGH QUALITY EDUCATION FOR OUR STUDENTS FOR A SUSTAINED PERIOD OF TIME.

SO I WAS LOOKING A COUPLE OF THEM THAT STOOD OUT MATH AND ENGLISH.

I THINK BONITA WAS 71.8% PROFICIENT IN ELA.

CLAREMONT, WHICH HAD A VERY GOOD 60.5.

GLENDORA HAD A VERY GOOD 61.8 GOING DOWN TO SOCIOECONOMIC DISADVANTAGE.

BONITA HAD 61.6.

AND THIS SAYS CLAREMONT HAD 47.3 AND GLENDORA HAD 48.7.

NON SOCIOECONOMIC BECAUSE AGAIN IF YOU JUST LOOK AT ONE GROUP AND NOT ANOTHER, THERE COULD BE A GROUP THAT'S NOT GETTING A HIGH QUALITY EDUCATION WITH ELA BONITA HAD 77.9 WHICH IS AMAZING.

CLAREMONT HAD 67.4 AND GLENDORA HAD 671.6.

AND THAT'S WHAT THE TEST SCORES SAY.

SO FOR MY FRIENDS WHO SOMETIMES REMEMBER WHAT THEY WERE SAYING 25 YEARS AGO, LET ME JUST SAY, OH, FOR REAL ESTATE AGENTS IN THIS AREA.

BONITA SCHOOL SHOULD BE A SELLING POINT BECAUSE THERE'S SOME PHENOMENAL WORK BEING DONE.

AND FROM EVERY SINGLE STAFF MEMBER HERE, I MEAN, WHETHER IT'S THE SUPERINTENDENT, THE DIRECTORS, THE ASSISTANT SUP'S, ALL THE SUPPORT STAFF, THE TEACHERS, THE COUNSELORS, THE ONE ON ONE AIDES, THE MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT STAFF, EVERY SINGLE PERSON IS DOING A GREAT JOB, AND IT'S REALLY REFLECTED ON THE LEARNING THAT HAS HAPPENED WITH OUR KIDS. AND I'M NOT ONLY A BOARD MEMBER, I'M ALSO A PARENT.

AND I CAN TELL YOU THAT MY KIDS HAVE GOTTEN A PHENOMENAL EDUCATION, AND AT SOME POINT, I'M NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO HELP MY DAUGHTER WITH MATH ANYMORE.

SO YAY FOR THAT.

AND THAT'S ALL I GOT TO SAY.

I CAN'T HELP MY SON WITH MATH RIGHT NOW.

HE'S A NINTH GRADER AND IT'S WAY ABOVE ME.

AND I WAS A SCIENCE MAJOR IN COLLEGE BUT YEAH, JUST LIKE DEREK WAS SAYING AND LOOKING AT THOSE SCORES, WE'VE NOT ONLY HAVE HIGH LEVELS, WE MAKE HIGH GROWTH.

SO WHILE WE JUMPED THIS FAR COMPARED TO OTHER PLACES THAT ARE MORE STAYING STAGNANT, YOU DON'T WANT TO BE A STAGNANT DISTRICT.

YOU WANT TO GO TO A PLACE WHERE EVERY YEAR YOU SEE THIS MAGNIFICENT GROWTH.

SO FOR SCHOOLS LIKE GRACE MILLER, WHICH IS THE REASON I MOVED INTO LA VERNE, THE SAFETY OF THE COMMUNITY AND THE SCHOOLS HERE.

AND I KNEW BACK THEN SOMEONE TOLD ME, IT'S A QUIET LITTLE SCHOOL.

NO ONE REALLY KNOWS ABOUT IT.

IT'S THIS LITTLE HIDDEN GEM.

BUT NOW I GUESS THE CAT'S OUT OF THE BAG NATIONWIDE, SO EVERYONE KNOWS GRACE MILLER NOW, BUT THEY DO A PHENOMENAL JOB THERE.

MOUNT SAC AS WELL.

AGAIN, NOT JUST A MEET AND GREET.

IT'S HOW CAN WE WORK TOGETHER TO KIND OF MAKE THAT TUNNEL FROM WHERE WE ARE NOW IN BONITA, GET OUR KIDS PREPPED AND JUST MAKES THEM BETTER CONNECTIONS WITH IT.

I EVEN HEARD THEY'RE OFFERING A BACHELOR'S PROGRAM AT A BACHELOR'S DEGREE AT MOUNT SAC.

WANT TO RECOMMEND EVERYONE WHO HAS KIDS INTERESTED IN THE SKILLS? THE SKILL TRADES BONITA USD? IF YOU'RE NOT GOING TO THE LA VERNE MEETING ON NOVEMBER 6TH FOR THE CITY COUNCIL MEETING TO HONOR GRACE MILLER A SECOND TIME AT 6:00 AT NIGHT, BONITA

[00:45:10]

HIGH SCHOOL IS OFFERING THE SKILLED TRADES FAIR, SO FROM 6 P.M.

TO ABOUT 7:30.

GREAT FOR EVERYONE JUST TO KIND OF GO JUST SEE WHAT IT IS, BECAUSE A LOT OF PEOPLE HERE AT SKILLED TRADES, THEY MIGHT HAVE HEARD LIKE 1 OR 2 THINGS, BUT THIS IS GOING TO BE A PLETHORA OF LOCAL AGENCIES, ASSOCIATIONS AND WHATNOT PRESENTING THERE.

AND THEN FINALLY CIF SEASON'S HERE AND WE HEARD FROM SOME OF OUR STUDENT REPS ABOUT IT.

NOTHING REALLY SAYS MORE TO A STUDENT, THOUGH, THAT'S SEEING YOUR SIDE FILLED UP IN THE BLEACHERS COMPARED TO THE VISITOR SIDE.

SO I RECOMMEND EVERYONE IF THEY CAN CHECK OUT THE FOOTBALL GAME THIS FRIDAY AT BONITA.

SEE WHAT HAPPENS WITH SAN DIMAS FOOTBALL THIS WEEK AS WELL AND ALL THE OTHER EVENTS AS WELL.

GO BONITA. WE'RE GREAT IN JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING I THINK.

I'LL SECOND THE CIF PLAYOFFS.

BONITA'S HOME SAN DIMAS WILL BE IN PALMDALE.

SO IF YOU WANT TO TAKE A DRIVE ON A FRIDAY NIGHT, GO UP THE HILL.

I'D LIKE TO ALSO THANK OUR VETERANS.

I THINK A FEW YEARS AGO, KEVIN, WE HAD 11 VETERANS EMPLOYED IN OUR DISTRICT WAS ROUGHLY THE COUNT WHEN WE.

[INAUDIBLE].

SO WE'RE RIGHT AROUND 11 EMPLOYEES OUT OF 1100 PEOPLE.

SO AND TWO OF THEM ARE SITTING IN THE BACK CORNER BACK THERE TONIGHT.

SO I'D LIKE TO CONGRATULATE THEM.

AND WE TALKED A LITTLE BIT ABOUT CTE.

AND WE ACTUALLY HAD A ONE OF OUR COSMETOLOGY STUDENTS AT [INAUDIBLE] COMPLETE HER COSMETOLOGY CERTIFICATE AND CAN NOW WORK.

AND TWO THAT ARE VERY CLOSE TO DOING IT.

SO WE'LL HAVE THREE FINALLY DONE.

AND. IF IT'S NOT THE FIRST EVER, IT'S THE FIRST IN A REAL LONG TIME FOR US.

SO WE'RE MAKING RIGHT MOVES ACROSS THE BOARD FROM PERFECT SCORES ON ADVANCED PLACEMENT COMPUTER TESTING TO COSMETOLOGY. SO VERY GOOD.

WELL, I JUST WANTED TO USE MY TIME TO SIMPLY REMIND PEOPLE TO GO TO OUR WEBSITE, GO TO OUR SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS, AND GET THE GOOD NEWS OF THE DISTRICT.

AND IF YOU WERE TO GO ON THE WEBSITE RIGHT NOW, YOU WOULD SEE ARTICLES RELATED TO OUR PERFECT SCORE AT THE COMPUTER SCIENCE AP COMPUTER SCIENCE PRINCIPLES EXAM. THAT WAS FROM BONITA HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR NATHAN KWAN, WHICH WAS AWESOME.

YOU WOULD ALSO SEE AN ARTICLE ON THERE ABOUT SAN DIMAS FRESHMAN JACQUELINE CHEN, WHO IS TRYING TO EARN A SPOT TO COMPETE IN THE 2024 SUMMER OLYMPICS.

IN THE AREA OF DIVING, YOU'LL HEAR ABOUT GRACE MILLER.

YOU'LL SEE OUR SOARING TEST SCORES, ONE OF THE FEW DISTRICTS THAT HAVE MITIGATED THE EFFECTS OF THE PANDEMIC.

AND SO I WOULD JUST ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO CONTINUE TO GET THE RIGHT NEWS AND THAT'S ON OUR WEBSITE AND OUR SOCIAL MEDIA.

THANK YOU. OKAY.

REQUEST TO SPEAK ON NON-AGENDA ITEMS COMMUNICATIONS FROM PUBLIC.
