GOOD EVENING, BOARD MEMBERS AND AUDIENCE.

I KNOW THAT IT'S ONLY BEEN A MONTH SINCE I LAST SPOKE ABOUT MY SCHOOL, BUT HERE AT BONITA HIGH SCHOOL, WE NEVER SLOW DOWN WHEN IT COMES TO OUR ATHLETICS, ARTS, ACADEMICS OR ACTIVITIES. OUR ARTS PROGRAM IS KICKING INTO HIGH GEAR AS OUR THEATER DEPARTMENT IS GETTING READY TO PRESENT THE FALL PLAY ENTITLED THE WOLVES.

THE SHOW DATES ARE NOVEMBER 17TH, 18TH AND 19TH, SO BE SURE TO GRAB A TICKET.

OUR MARCHING BAND PROGRAM ALSO WENT OUT FOR OUR FIRST COMPETITION AND TOOK HOME FIRST PLACE IN OUR DIVISION.

AND I PERSONALLY AM SO EXCITED TO SEE HOW FAR WE GO THIS SEASON.

OUR FALL SPORTS HAVE COME TO A CLOSE AND IT WAS QUITE AN AMAZING SEASON FOR THEM ALL.

OUR FIELD HOCKEY TEAM GOT THIRD IN CIF AND FINISHED AS LEAGUE CHAMPS.

WE RECENTLY HAD OUR DANCING THROUGH THE DECADES HOMECOMING DANCE AND RALLY, AND IT WAS SUCH A BLAST.

WE HAD MORE THAN 1100 STUDENTS ATTEND AND IT IS ALWAYS GOOD TO SEE ALL OF OUR BEARCAT FAMILY DANCING THE NIGHT AWAY TOGETHER.

FINALLY, FOR ACADEMICS, WE HELD LOTS OF COLLEGE PRESENTATIONS FOR OUR GRADUATING SENIORS FROM SCHOOLS SUCH AS USC, CHAPMAN UNIVERSITY, AND HARVEY MUDD COLLEGE.

OUR FIRST QUARTER JUST ENDED, SO STUDENTS ARE GETTING READY TO DO THAT FINAL PUSH TO FINISH OUT THE SEMESTER.

AND OUR AMAZING TEACHERS ARE RIGHT BY OUR SIDE TO HELP US SUCCEED.

FINALLY, I WANT TO LEAVE YOU ALL WITH BONITA'S VISION STATEMENT, WHICH OUR INCREDIBLE STAFF UPHOLDS EVERY DAY.

OUR STUDENT OF THE MONTH FOR CHAPARRAL IS VINNY ORTEGA AND THE STUDENT OF THE MONTH FOR VISTA IS MICHAEL PINEDA.

OUR STAFF MEMBER OF THE MONTH IS MR. PANDO, WHO IS OUR CULINARY ARTS TEACHER.

OUR ADVANCED CULINARY CLASS SERVED UP AN AMAZING ORIGINAL RECIPE OF PUMPKIN PANCAKES WITH HOMEMADE APPLE BUTTER AND WHIPPED CREAM FOR ALL OF OUR TEACHERS SELECTED

STUDENTS OF THE MONTH, AND THEY WERE DELICIOUS.

AS YOU HAVE HEARD FROM VARIOUS PORTS, OUR CHAP VISTA FAMILY IS FOCUSED ON EQUITY AND INCLUSION, POSITIVE, SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL PRACTICES AND THE MENTAL AND THE MENTAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING.

PART OF OUR RALLY CELEBRATED OUR FIRST OUR VERY FIRST LOVE YOURSELF DAY.

OUR TEACHER, MRS. FOWLER, AND THE RENAISSANCE CLASS MADE THESE BUTTONS LIKE THE ONE I'M WEARING FOR EVERY STUDENT AND STAFF MEMBER WITH THE WORDS I HEART MYSELF WRITTEN ON THEM.

ON THE 21ST OF OCTOBER, WE HELD OUR FIRST RENAISSANCE ASSEMBLY, CELEBRATING THE END OF THE FIRST QUARTER AND RECOGNIZING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT.

PART OF THE ASSEMBLY WAS DEDICATED TO CANCER AWARENESS MONTH.

WE WORE PINK OR LIGHT BLUE FOR BREAST CANCER AND PROSTATE CANCER.

WE FORMALLY STOOD UP TO CANCER, HOLDING UP SIGNS WITH NAMES OF LOVED ONES WHO ARE BATTLING OR HAVE BATTLED CANCER, INCLUDING A MOMENT OF SILENCE.

ACADEMIC COLLEGE AND CAREER PREPARATION.

22 CHAPARRAL SENIORS OFFICIALLY APPLIED FOR FAFSA, AND MANY MORE HAVE STARTED THE PROCESS AND ARE IN PROGRESS.

17 SENIORS HAVE ALREADY REGISTERED FOR MOUNT SAN ANTONIO COLLEGE.

ONE HAS REGISTERED TO ATTEND LA SIERRA UNIVERSITY AND CITRUS WILL BE JOINING US NEXT MONTH TO GET OUR FUTURE CITRUS BOUND SENIORS REGISTERED.

CHAP IS ON FIRE AND STUDENTS HAVE SET UP FOR SUCCESS.

WE ARE EXCITED FOR ALL THAT IS AHEAD.

SENIORS ENROLLED IN MRS. LIEDLE'S ECONOMICS CLASS JUST COMPLETED IN SHARK TANK.

SHARK TANK IS A PROJECT BASED ASSESSMENT ASSIGNED TO TEACH STUDENTS THE RISK AND REWARD THAT COMES FROM OWNING AND OPERATING YOUR OWN BUSINESS.

STUDENTS ARE ASKED TO DEVELOP A BUSINESS PLAN THEY THINK THAT WOULD DO WELL IN THEIR CURRENT ECONOMY.

THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT IF THEIR BUSINESS IS GOING TO BE GOODS OR SERVICES OR BOTH, AND IF IT IS GOING TO ACCOMMODATE THE NEEDS OR WANTS OF SOCIETY. THEY CELEBRATE WITH PEERS TO CONSTRUCT A SALES PITCH THAT REQUIRES THEM TO LET THEIR INVESTORS KNOW WHAT THEIR PRODUCT IS, WHY IT WOULD BE SUCCESSFUL IN OUR CURRENT ECONOMY, WHO THEIR INTENDED CONSUMER WOULD BE, AND HOW ARE THEY GOING TO MARKET TO THAT AUDIENCE TO INCREASE SALES, THEY HAVE TO ORALLY PRESENT THIS PITCH TO AN ADJUDICATING PANEL WHILE ADJUST PROFESSIONALLY TO NOT ONLY INCREASE THEIR PUBLIC SPEAKING CONFIDENCE, BUT ALSO TO HELP THEM PREPARE FOR THEIR SENIOR PROJECT PRESENTATION.

ALSO, OUR ERWC SENIOR ENGLISH STUDENTS ARE WRITING AN ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY FOCUSED ON WRITING PROMPTS THAT COVER CURRICULUM FROM THE GOVERNMENT AND ECONOMIC CLASSES.

THE THREE TEACHERS COLLABORATING FOR THE ESSAY WILL BE ABLE TO PROVIDE INSTRUCTION AND AND SUPPORT ACROSS THE CURRICULUM IN MORE THAN ONE CLASS.

ART. OUR STUDENTS ARE WORKING ON COLOR, PENCIL TILE DESIGNS.

STUDENTS HAVE THE DESIGNS ALL DRAWN UP, AND NOW WE ARE WORKING ON COLOR SCHEMES IN DESIGN AND MIXED MEDIA CLASS STUDENTS ARE APPLYING PAINT THIS WEEK TO COMPLETE THEIR POSTERIZED PORTRAITS. I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH YOU.

THIS IS ONE POSTERIZED PORTRAIT I DID OF MY GODSON THAT I ACTUALLY FINISHED.

IT'S JUST A COPY AND IT CAME OUT REALLY GOOD.

EACH DAY OF RED RIBBON WEEK, WE HELD AN ACTIVITY FOR OUR GUIDANCE CLASSES TO COMPETE AT LUNCH, EMPHASIZING THE NEED FOR HEALTHY CHOICES IN LIFE.

WE SOLVED THE FOOD SCRAMBLE, COMPETED IN A WATER CHUG CONTEST, BOBBED FOR APPLES AND COMPETED IN A BALLOON RELAY.

AND WE STRUCK A YOGA POST CALLED STANDING TREE TO SEE WHO COULD HOLD IT THE LONGEST.

CHAP VISTA IS STARTING UP SOME NEW SCHOOL CLUBS INITIATED BY STUDENTS.

STUDENT NICOLE GODDESS WILL LEAD AN ORGANIZED SPORTS CLUB PROMOTING PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND HEALTHY LIFESTYLE.

THE CLUB'S FOCUS IS RECREATIONAL BUT COMPETITIVE.

THERE IS ALSO THE ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB HOSTED BY STUDENT TRINITY RIVERA.

THE PURPOSE OF THIS CLUB IS TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN HUMAN ACTIONS AND OUR ENVIRONMENT AND EDUCATE THE SCHOOL'S COMMUNITY OF STEPS THAT CAN BE TAKEN TO IMPROVE OUR ENVIRONMENT.

SPORTS. OUR FOOTBALL TEAM COMPLETED ITS UNDEFEATED SEASON, AND THIS MORNING WE PLAYED OUR FIRST BASKETBALL GAME AGAINST SIERRA HIGH SCHOOL.

I WANT TO THANK THE SAN DIMAS SAINTS FOR ALLOWING US TO USE OUR GYM TO PLAY OUR HOME GAMES.

OUR NEXT GAME IS AGAINST MOUNT OLIVE [INAUDIBLE] HIGH SCHOOL ON NOVEMBER 10TH.

WE CONTINUE WITH OUR HORSESHOE TOURNAMENT WITH SEVERAL MORE TEAMS BEING ELIMINATED FROM THIS DOUBLE ELIMINATION COMPETITION.

IT'S GETTING REALLY SCARY.

UNFORTUNATELY, THEY COULD NOT PULL AWAY WITH THE WIN, BUT THEY HAD AN AMAZING SEASON.

WE HAVE THREE SENIORS SIGNING THEIR LETTER OF INTENT TO FURTHER THEIR ATHLETIC AND ACADEMIC CAREERS AT A COLLEGIATE LEVEL.

BOYS WATER POLO WAS ABLE TO SECURE THE LEAGUE TITLE THIS YEAR WITH AN IMPRESSIVE EIGHT AND ONE RECORD IN LEAGUE.

THE BOYS TOOK ON PALM SPRINGS YESTERDAY AND PULLED AWAY WITH THE WIN 22 THREE.

AND THEY ARE IN DIVISION 5AND THEY'RE SEATED NUMBER TWO.

TODAY WE HAD OUR GIRLS TENNIS TEAM PLAY ROUND ONE IN CIF.

THEY ALSO WENT UNDEFEATED IN LEAGUE THIS YEAR.

ON TO ACADEMICS.

WE HAD 148 SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS TAKE THE PSAT.

OUR BIO-MEDICAL CLASS HAD A DETECTIVE AS A GUEST SPEAKER.

THEY SET UP A CRIME SCENE AND ATTEMPTED TO SOLVE THE CRIME.

THE ST. SCROLL, WHICH IS OUR SCHOOL NEWSPAPER, WAS JUST RELEASED.

THE STUDENTS DID A GREAT JOB UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF MRS. LEHRMAN. THERE'S ALSO A GREAT TRIBUTE TO OUR BELOVED SUBSTITUTE TEACHER, MR. ROCK.

ONTO OUR ARTS. THE CHOIR HAD ITS FALL CONCERT.

STUDENTS LEARN TO SING AND SPEAK IN 3 TO 4 DIFFERENT LANGUAGES.

THE BCA WAS FILLED.

THE BAND COMPETED IN THE FALL STATE FIELD SHOW COMPETITION, QUALIFYING ROUNDS IN WHITTIER AND SAN DIEGO.

AND NOW INTO OUR ACTIVITIES.

WE HAD A CRAZY HOMECOMING.

AS MANY OF YOU GUYS KNOW, IT POURED ON OUR OUTSIDE VENUE.

IT WAS, HEY, BUT EVERYBODY HAD A GOOD TIME.

ACTUALLY, A LOT OF KIDS I'VE ASKED HAD IT FELT LIKE IT WAS STRAIGHT OUT OF A MOVIE, WHICH IS THAT'S ALWAYS A GOOD THING.

THE WEEK STARTED SUCCESSFUL WITH A RALLY WHERE WE HIGHLIGHTED OUR HOMECOMING KING, BRIAN FREELAND.

WE HAD A SUCCESSFUL PARADE WHERE WE INCLUDED OUR SCHOOL OFFICIALS, GRADE SCHOOLS AND MIDDLE SCHOOL COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND SO MANY OTHER PEOPLE.

THE FOOTBALL GAME FOLLOWED THAT NIGHT WHERE WE CROWNED OUR HOMECOMING QUEEN, FRANKIE COLEMAN.

WE ALSO CELEBRATED DƍA DE LOS MUERTOS WITH FUN FILLED EVENTS IN OUR QUAD WHILE ALSO CELEBRATING HALLOWEEN.

OUR TWO MENTAL HEALTH THERAPIST, MR. FLOWERS AND MS. ZUNIGA ALSO PUT ON A THING FOR THE DECEASED, AND WE WROTE STICKY NOTES SAYING HOW WE MISS EVERYBODY.

AND IT WAS LIKE, YOU KNOW, I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT'S CALLED, BUT THE THING WHERE THEY OFRENDA THERE WE GO.

SORRY, BUT YEAH, THEY STUDENTS HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO BRING A PICTURE OF ONE OF THEIR DECEASED LOVED ONES THAT ADD IT TO THE OFRENDA AND ALL THE STUDENTS REALLY ENJOYED THOSE EVENTS. I'M EXCITED FOR WHAT THIS NEXT MONTH HAS TO OFFER AND THANK YOU AGAIN FOR ALLOWING ME TO BE HERE.

FIRST WILL HAVE A RECOGNITION OF SPECIALIZED SERVICES PRESCHOOLS BLAST PROGRAM INTRODUCED BY MR. WIEN. THANK YOU. BONITA UNIFIED'S BLAST PROGRAM IS A PRESCHOOL INCLUSION PROGRAM FOR THREE YEAR OLD STUDENTS.

THIS INNOVATIVE PROGRAM, WHICH LAUNCHED IN 2015, ALLOWS STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS TO ATTEND SCHOOL WITH THEIR PEERS.

OUR PRESCHOOL PROGRAM WAS RECENTLY SELECTED BY THE CALIFORNIA EARLY CHILDHOOD SPECIAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT AND THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AS AN EXEMPLAR, INNOVATIVE AND INCLUSIVE PRESCHOOL PROGRAM.

SPEAKING TONIGHT TO AWARD OUR OUTSTANDING STAFF WHO RUN THE PROGRAM, SENIOR DIRECTOR OF SPECIALIZED SERVICES, DANIELLE WALKER.

[APPLAUSE] THANK YOU, MR. WIEN AND THE BOARD OF EDUCATION.

AS MR. WIEN SHARED, OUR BLAST PRESCHOOL PROGRAM WAS SELECTED AS AN EXEMPLAR, INNOVATIVE AND INCLUSIVE PRESCHOOL PROGRAM.

THIS WAS QUITE THE HONOR, AS THERE WERE 48 APPLICANTS FROM ACROSS THE STATE THAT APPLIED, AND WE WERE THRILLED TO BE THE ONE OF TWO DISTRICTS RECOGNIZED.

FROM ITS INCEPTION, THE PROGRAM HAS BEEN A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT, EVEN DURING THE SELECTION PROCESS OF THIS RECOGNITION, WHICH INCLUDED BOTH A WRITTEN APPLICATION AND AN INTERVIEW. THE TEAM WORKED TOGETHER TO APPLY EACH MEMBER SHARING THEIR CONTRIBUTION TOWARD CREATING A MODEL INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT.

AS PART OF THE GRANT, WE WILL BE SHARING OUR EXEMPLAR PROGRAM WITH OTHER DISTRICTS AND SELPAS, WHICH IN TURN WILL POSITIVELY IMPACT PRESCHOOL PROGRAMS AND THEREFORE STUDENTS, BOTH WITH AND WITHOUT IEPS ACROSS CALIFORNIA, WE HAVE TWO PROGRAMS IN OUR DISTRICT ONE AT GRACE MILLER ELEMENTARY AND ONE AT SHULL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

THIS YEAR, THE FOUNDATION DONATED NEARLY $13,000 WORTH OF GRANTS FOR 39 PROJECTS.

WE ARE TRULY BLESSED TO BE ABLE TO PARTNER WITH OUR TEACHERS THROUGHOUT OUR DISTRICT TO FOR AN UNPARALLELED AMOUNT OF MINI GRANTS THIS YEAR, WHICH WE WERE ABLE TO FUND THROUGH OUR FUNDRAISING EFFORTS LIKE OUR ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT.

AND AS YOU CAN SEE, MANY OF OUR TEACHERS ARE HERE THIS EVENING.

OUR MINI GRANTS BASICALLY GO TO FILL IN SOME OF THOSE GAPS AND ENHANCE OUR TEACHER PROJECTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, WHETHER IT'S IN THE CLASSROOMS OR FUNDAMENTAL THINGS IN OUR LIBRARIES OR SPECIAL SERVICES.

AND SO I'D LIKE TO INTRODUCE ANTHONY PORTER, WHO'S OUR PRESIDENT OF THE FOUNDATION.

SO WE HAVE MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT SPECIALISTS WHO ARE LICENSED THERAPISTS, EITHER MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPY OR SOCIAL WORK LICENSES, 14 OF THOSE ARE 16 GUIDANCE COUNSELORS WHO ARE CREDENTIALED COUNSELORS.

THREE DIS ERMHS COUNSELORS.

THAT'S ONE OF THE BEEFIEST ACRONYMS YOU'LL SEE.

SO IT TAKES THE WHOLE PAGE TO DEFINE IT DOWN THERE AT THE BOTTOM.

OUR 12 SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST DIS ERMHS BY THE WAY, ARE TYPICALLY LICENSED COUNSELORS WHO PROVIDE COUNSELING SERVICES FOR STUDENTS WHO HAVE COUNSELING IN THEIR IEPS.

AND THEY HOLD SIMILAR LICENSES TO WHAT OUR MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT SPECIALISTS HOLD.

OUR SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS WE HAVE FOUR SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST INTERNS THIS YEAR TWO SOCIAL WORKERS WHO BEGAN AS OUR FOSTER YOUTH LIAISONS.

WE'RE EXPANDING THAT HAVE BEEN IN THIS YEAR WE HAVE NINE SOCIAL WORK INTERNS AND OF COURSE, OUR 24 SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS WHO SIGNIFICANTLY CONTRIBUTE TO THAT.

YOU TOTAL ALL THIS UP.

THIS TEAM'S ABOUT 80 PEOPLE WHO WORK TOWARDS SUPPORTING THE GENERAL WELLNESS OF OUR STUDENTS.

TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT OUR JOURNEY SINCE 2019.

THIS STARTED JUST BEFORE COVID, SO WE WERE A BIT AHEAD OF THE GAME ON THIS.

2019, WE HIRED OUR FIRST GROUP OF EIGHT MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT SPECIALISTS ALL AT ONCE.

OVER ONE SUMMER WE BROUGHT THAT WHOLE TEAM OF EIGHT IN TOGETHER, WHICH WAS BY DESIGN.

WE WANTED TO ESTABLISH ESSENTIALLY THAT WHOLE LEVEL AND NOT KIND OF PIECE IT IN; ONE AT EACH OF THE SECONDARY SCHOOLS, ONE FOR EVERY OTHER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

IT TOOK US ABOUT TWO WEEKS TO REALIZE THAT ONE PER SECONDARY SCHOOL WAS NOT GOING TO BE ENOUGH.

SO WE IMMEDIATELY BEGAN LOOKING TO EXPAND THAT.

SO OVER THE COURSE OF THE NEXT COUPLE OF YEARS, WE HIRED AN ADDITIONAL FORCE AND WE NOW HAVE TWO FULL TIME MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT SPECIALISTS AT EACH OF THE SECONDARY SCHOOLS.

AND THEIR CASELOADS ALSO FILLED UP FAIRLY QUICKLY.

AND THEN CHAPARRAL VISTA ALSO FUNDS TWO ADDITIONAL COUNSELORS THROUGH A GRANT THAT COMES THROUGH THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA.

AND THAT'S WHERE THE TOTAL OF OUR CURRENT 14 COME FROM.

AND WE'LL TALK A BIT AT THE END OF THE PRESENTATION ABOUT KIND OF AS WE LOOK FORWARD, WHAT DO WE IMAGINE THIS COMPLETE SYSTEM LOOKING LIKE? JUST A QUICK OVERVIEW OF THE KIND OF THINGS THAT WE DO IN TERMS OF COUNSELING AND WELLNESS.

THE FIRST FEW BULLETS ARE THINGS THAT GUIDANCE COUNSELORS HAVE DONE FOR MANY YEARS.

THIS ACADEMIC SUPPORT IS HELPING KIDS GET INTO COLLEGE, WORKING WITH STUDENTS WHO ARE STRUGGLING.

A LOT OF WHAT WE JUST GENERALLY CALL PERSONAL SOCIAL ISSUES, RELATIONAL ISSUES, SUPPORT AND INTERVENTION FOR THINGS LIKE ATTENDANCE OR OTHER ISSUES THAT MAY BE CAUSING STUDENTS TO STRUGGLE IN SCHOOL.

WE NOW HAVE A WHOLE, WHAT I CALL A THERAPEUTIC SUPPORT LAYER.

THAT'S PRIMARILY WHAT OUR LICENSED COUNSELORS DO, INCLUDING DIRECT INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING AND GROUP COUNSELING, THAT REALLY EXACTLY THE SAME AS WHAT A STUDENT MAY ACCESS IN A CLINIC FROM A LICENSED SUPPORT PERSON.

WE NOW HAVE THOSE EMBEDDED IN SCHOOLS.

THE ELEMENTARY IN PARTICULAR, CONTRIBUTE SIGNIFICANTLY TO WHAT WE CALL OUR KIND OF FOUNDATIONAL OR WHAT MIGHT BE CALLED TIER ONE SUPPORT SYSTEMS, MEANING THOSE THINGS YOU DO FOR ALL STUDENTS AROUND MENTAL HEALTH WELLNESS.

SECOND STEP IS AN EXAMPLE OF THAT.

AND THEN OF COURSE, WELLNESS, RESOURCES, INFORMATION.

AND NOW WE HAVE A SOCIAL WORK SERVICES DEPARTMENT WHERE WE SUPPORT FAMILIES WITH ISSUES THAT MAY EXIST OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL WALLS THAT ARE CAUSING ISSUES WITH EDUCATIONAL SUCCESS AND REALLY BUILDING THAT PROGRAM THROUGH OUR TWO SOCIAL WORKERS AND THE INTERN PROGRAM.

NOW, IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO MEASURE THE IMPACT OF COUNSELING BECAUSE COUNSELING IS A LOT ABOUT MAINTAINING STABILITY AND PREVENTING CRISIS.

SO IT'S OFTEN MEASURED BY WHAT DOES NOT HAPPEN, WHICH IS A BIT HARD TO QUANTIFY.

BUT WE DO MEASURE COUNSELING CONTACTS DURING THE 2021, 2022 SCHOOL YEAR IN AREAS IN WHAT WE CALL INTERVENTIONS.

THERE WERE OVER 24,000 INDIVIDUAL ENTRIES MADE.

AND I GUARANTEE YOU THAT WAS NOT EVEN HALF OF THE ACTUAL CONTACTS BECAUSE THAT MEANT IT WAS ENOUGH FOR THEM TO WRITE IT DOWN.

MANY CONTACTS ARE MORE CASUAL, BUT JUST AS IMPORTANT ABOUT A LITTLE UNDER OVER 13,000 WERE FOR PERSONAL, SOCIAL AND OVER 9000 FOR ACADEMIC SUPPORT, AS WELL AS SOME OTHER CATEGORIES THAT WERE A BIT SMALLER.

THIS YEAR WE ADDED A SPECIFIC CATEGORY TO HELP US TRACK SOCIAL WORK CONTACTS WHERE THAT WAS SPECIFIC, MAYBE WORKING WITH THE FAMILY FOR FOOD OR HOUSING OR SOMETHING.

OF OVER 4200 INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS HAD COUNSELING CONTACTS, ONE OR MORE CONTACTS OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR.

SO YOU CAN SEE THAT'S AN AVERAGE OF ABOUT SIX CONTACTS PER KID IN TERMS OF WHAT WAS RECORDED.

SOME MAY HAVE HAD ONE TO TALK ABOUT GETTING INTO COLLEGE.

OTHERS MAY HAVE BEEN SEEING A COUNSELOR TWICE A MONTH FOR THE ENTIRE SCHOOL YEAR BECAUSE WE DO LOG THERAPY SESSIONS AND THAT KIND OF THING.

AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR, THERE WERE ABOUT 700 STUDENTS WHO WERE ON ONE OF OUR COUNSELORS CASELOAD, MEANING THEY WERE RECEIVING REGULAR THERAPEUTIC SUPPORT.

PRIOR TO 2019 THAT CASELOAD WOULD HAVE BEEN JUST THE DIS ERMHS COUNSELORS AND WOULD HAVE BEEN MAYBE 100 TO 150 STUDENTS.

SO IT IS A HUGE INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS RECEIVING DIRECT, THERAPEUTIC, ONGOING SUPPORT THROUGH SOMEONE WHO WORKS FOR THE BONITA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT, WHICH IS SOMETHING WE REALIZED PRIOR TO 2019.

I'LL KIND OF GET TO THAT IN A SEC, THAT WE KIND OF ALSO LEVERAGE COMMUNITY RESOURCES, BUT THERE WAS A LIMIT TO THAT UNTIL WE PUT IT ON OUR CAMPUSES, IT WAS NOT REALLY GOING TO HAVE THE IMPACT WE WERE HOPING FOR.

BUT SINCE WE'VE DONE THAT, IT IS ABSOLUTELY WE'RE SEEING THE IMPACT OF IT IN THE NUMBER OF CONTACTS AND THE NUMBER OF KIDS RECEIVING THERAPY.

A FEW OTHER KIND OF WELLNESS AND SUPPORT SYSTEMS IN ADDITION TO THE PEOPLE THAT WE PARTNER WITH A GROUP CALLED CARE SOLACE, AND THEY DO WHAT WE CALL A WARM HANDOFF.

A COLD HANDOFF IS GIVING YOU A WEBSITE OR A PHONE NUMBER.

A WARM HANDOFF MEANS SOMEONE IS WORKING WITH YOU THROUGH THE PROCESS.

CARE SOLACE HAS TWO OPTIONS.

THEY HAVE A SEMI WARM, ANONYMOUS SEARCH, BUT IT'S EXTENSIVE.

IT'S 10 OR 12 QUESTIONS THAT ARE ANSWERED.

AND THEN THE END PRODUCT IS A LIST OF LOCAL THERAPISTS OR DRUG REHABILITATION CENTERS THAT MEET THE CRITERIA THAT YOU PUT IN.

AND THEN BUT THEY CAN ALSO CALL CARE SOLACE AND GET CONNECTED TO A HUMAN BEING WHO WILL WALK THEM THROUGH THE PROCESS, INCLUDING HELPING THEM NAVIGATE INSURANCE AND FIND A THERAPIST. AND THEN WE TRACK WHAT'S CALLED AN APPOINTMENT INTO CARE, WHICH MEANS THEY HAD A VERIFIED FIRST APPOINTMENT WITH A THERAPIST.

WE HAD 141 OF THOSE LAST YEAR.

THAT'S IN ADDITION TO THE 700 KIDS WHO WE WERE SEEING.

AND THIS IS AVAILABLE TO OUR ENTIRE COMMUNITY.

SO FAR THIS YEAR, ALMOST HALF OF OUR REFERRALS IN CARE SOLACE HAVE BEEN FOR ADULTS.

SO BOTH FOR OUR STAFF AS WELL AS PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY AND CARE SOLACE SETS THAT UP ON PURPOSE.

IT'S NOT LIKE PEOPLE ARE SNEAKING IN THE PURPOSE IS YOU OPEN IT TO THE COMMUNITY AND WHOEVER NEEDS ASSISTANCE CAN GET IT.

WE'RE ALSO COLLECTING SOCIAL EMOTIONAL DATA THROUGH A SYSTEM CALLED PANORAMA, AND THAT'S LIKE IN THE PRESENTATIONS YOU HEARD FROM THE PRINCIPALS WHERE THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT THINGS LIKE SENSE OF BELONGING.

THIS IS WHERE THAT KIND OF DATA IS COMING FROM.

AND SO WE DO THAT TWICE A YEAR.

IT STOPPED A BIT DURING COVID, BUT WE HAVE REINSTITUTED THAT IT ACTUALLY STARTED JUST BEFORE COVID AND WE HAVE BROUGHT THAT BACK.

AND I'LL TALK A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT WHAT WE'RE DOING WITH THAT DATA.

WE HAVE A SUICIDE RISK ASSESSMENT PROTOCOL THAT'S BEEN IN PLACE FOR A WHILE THAT ALL OF OUR PSYCHOLOGISTS AND MENTAL HEALTH FOLKS ARE TRAINED ON.

WE DO SUICIDE AWARENESS TRAINING FOR STAFF.

THE GOAL IS TO OFFER IT TO EVERY STAFF MEMBER.

WE DO IT PRIMARILY IN STAFF MEETINGS, AND THEN I DO A COUPLE OF ZOOM SESSIONS FOR ANYONE ELSE WHO COULDN'T GET TO A STAFF MEETING.

AND THEN WE MAINTAIN SEVERAL WELLNESS RESOURCES WEBSITES, ONE AT THE DISTRICT LEVEL AND THEN INDIVIDUAL COUNSELORS ALSO SOMETIMES SET UP SITES WHERE PEOPLE CAN JUST FIND HELPFUL INFORMATION, THINGS TO DO, HOW TO TALK TO KIDS AND THAT SORT OF THING, AS WELL AS LINKS TO OUTSIDE RESOURCES.

WE CONTINUE TO WORK WITH LOCAL COMMUNITY PARTNERS WE HAVE OUR TWO LOCAL COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH PROVIDERS, TRI-CITY ON THE LA VERNE SIDE AND MCKINLEY ON THE SAN DIMAS SIDE. IT'S ONE OF MANY THINGS THAT ARE INTERESTING ABOUT A TWO CITY DISTRICT.

WE HAVE RIGHT TO DIFFERENT POLICE DEPARTMENTS, TWO DIFFERENT MENTAL HEALTH PROVIDERS.

SO WE DO SCHOOL BASED COUNSELING THROUGH BOTH OF THEM, WHERE THEY SEND EITHER INTERNS OR THERAPISTS ONTO CAMPUS TO MEET WITH KIDS THAT WOULD ACTUALLY INCREASE THAT 700 I TALKED ABOUT WOULD NOT HAVE EVEN INCLUDED THESE CASELOADS.

SO THAT WOULD MAKE THIS EVEN BIGGER.

AND WE'RE ALSO PART OF THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE FOR A GRANT THAT TRI-CITY RECENTLY ONE CALLED THE MENTAL HEALTH STUDENT SERVICES ACT.

SO WE'RE ONE OF THEIR DISTRICT PARTNERS AND AN ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEMBER THAT I ATTEND THOSE MEETINGS.

AND WHAT I'M PARTICULARLY LOOKING FORWARD TO IS THEY'RE GOING TO BE THEY ARE GOING TO BE CREATING A LOCAL CRISIS RESPONSE TEAM THAT OPERATES JUST HERE IN THE SAN GABRIEL VALLEY.

WE DO HAVE ACCESS TO ONE THAT'S FOR ALL OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY.

SO ACCESS CAN BE UNPREDICTABLE, BUT THEY'RE GOING TO DEVELOP ONE THAT WILL BE MORE ACCESSIBLE, PARTICULARLY TO THE THREE DISTRICTS THAT MAKE UP TRI-CITY, WHICH IS US, POMONA AND CLAREMONT.

SO THAT'S THAT'S GOING TO TAKE A COUPLE OF YEARS TO ROLL OUT.

JUST STARTED THIS YEAR WE'RE IN THE PLANNING PHASE, BUT WE'RE A PART OF THAT PROCESS AS WELL.

SO EVEN THOUGH WE HAVE ADDED A LOT OF INTERNAL MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT, WE DO CONTINUE TO WORK WITH OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS TO FIND EVERY RESOURCE POSSIBLE TO REACH AS MANY KIDS AS WE CAN. AND THEN WHAT WE'RE WORKING ON RIGHT NOW IS WE KIND OF HEAD TOWARDS THE FUTURE.

WE HAVE SOMETHING JUST SIMPLY CALLED THE WELLNESS PROJECT.

WE HAVE PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN TRAINED TO DO THAT.

MOST OF OUR MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT SPECIALISTS ARE GOING THROUGH DIALECTICAL BEHAVIOR THERAPY TRAINING, WHICH I DON'T KNOW A TON ABOUT.

BUT FROM WHAT I'VE READ, IT'S REALLY JUST A THERAPY TECHNIQUE THAT LOTS OF FOLKS ARE GETTING TRAINED ON.

SO IT JUST GIVES US ANOTHER LAYER OF EXPERTISE AMONG THE PEOPLE THAT WE EMPLOY.

I THINK THAT'S ACTUALLY NEXT WEEK AS WELL.

WE ARE DEVELOPING STUDENT SUICIDE AWARENESS, EDUCATION, RESOURCES.

WE'RE DEVELOPING A SOCIAL WORK SERVICES DEPARTMENT, WHICH WE'RE EXPANDING KIND OF FROM THE FOSTER YOUTH.

WE'RE HOPING TO WORK WITH PTA ON A SPRING WELLNESS CONFERENCE, VERY HOPEFUL THAT COVID COOPERATES WITH THAT.

THERE'S A QUICK EVALUATION THAT TAKES PLACE.

AND THEN BASED ON THAT, THERE'S A MORE EXTENSIVE EVALUATION THAT, LIKE A LICENSED PROFESSIONAL WOULD DO, NOT JUST LIKE I WOULD NOT BE QUALIFIED TO DO THAT.

SO THERE IS NOW SORT OF A STANDARD OF KIND OF QUESTIONS YOU ASK THAT ASK YOU WHERE'S THE TRIGGER THAT DIDN'T EXIST.

GENERALLY, IF THE COUNSELING IS ESTABLISHED IN THE IEP, THEY WOULD SEE A DIS ERMHS COUNSELOR, BUT LIKE A STUDENT WHO MAYBE NEEDS SOME COUNSELING SUPPORT, BUT NOT AT THE LEVEL WHERE IT'D BE PLACED IN THE IEP CAN STILL ACCESS THE OTHER LICENSED THERAPIST.

SO THEY'RE NOT JUST KIND OF DEPENDS ON HOW THE DECISION TO PROVIDE THEM COUNSELING IS MADE.

SO FOR ALL KIDS IN IEP ANY KID IN IEP, IT COULD BE THEM, OR IT COULD BE SOMEONE ELSE DEPENDING ON THE LEVEL OR? DEPENDING ON WHETHER OR NOT THE SERVICE IS SPECIFICALLY ESTABLISHED IN THEIR IEP OR WHETHER IT'S NOT.

I THINK IF I'M CORRECT ME IF I'M MISTAKEN, I THINK SAN DIMAS AND HIGH SCHOOL AND EKSTRAND WENT UP IN SEVERAL CATEGORIES.

SO THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED.

YOU KNOW, IT'S ONE THING TO HEAR ABOUT COVID SLIDE, BUT COVID GROWTH IS A VERY WEIRD THING TO TALK ABOUT.

THE STAFF EKED OUT A 2219 THRILLER, BUT WHAT IT REALLY ILLUSTRATED WAS JUST SCHOOL SPIRIT AND CAMARADERIE WITH THE TEACHING, THE TEACHERS AND THE STAFF OR THE KIDS, WHICH WAS JUST REALLY AWESOME TO SEE.

AND THEN ON LAST THURSDAY, IT WENT TO THE ROYNON TALENT SHOW HELD AT THE BCA.

A LOT OF REALLY CUTE ACTS SINGING, DANCING, SOME MARTIAL ARTS.

BUT THE SHOW ENDED WITH FIFTH GRADE STUDENT LEAH COMPTON, SINGING CHAMPION BY CARRIE UNDERWOOD BROUGHT THE HOUSE DOWN.

I PERSONALLY HAVE WORKED IN SPECIAL ED FOR OVER 20 YEARS, AND I CAN TELL YOU FIRSTHAND THAT LIVING THROUGH A SCHOOL LOCKDOWN, BEING ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THAT DOOR IS EXTREMELY TRAUMATIC HAVING CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS COUNTING ON YOU FOR THEIR SAFETY.

SO I IMPLORE YOU TO TO REALLY TAKE PREVENTATIVE MEASURES TO GIVE OUR STUDENTS AT SURE A LEG UP ON ANY AGGRESSOR WHO WOULD WANT TO HARM THEM.

MY SECOND REQUEST IS TO PROVIDE A SAFE ALTERNATIVE TO EATING IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL.

IF YOU WERE TO DRIVE PAST THAT LUNCHTIME, YOU'LL SEE THAT MANY OF THE CHILDREN ARE EATING THEIR LUNCH IN FRONT OF THE LAWN AT THE SCHOOL, AND AT FIRST GLANCE IT'S HARMLESS.

BUT AGAIN, IN THE DAY AND AGE THAT WE'RE LIVING IN, WITH SCHOOL SHOOTINGS BECOMING MORE AND MORE COMMON, OUR KIDS ARE TOO VULNERABLE AND THEY'RE EXTREMELY EXPOSED RIGHT IN FRONT OF THAT LAWN. SO THE WORST THAT COULD HAPPEN IS AN ACTIVE SHOOTER SITUATION.

BUT WHAT ABOUT A CAR ACCIDENTALLY PLOWING THROUGH OR A CHILD WITH SPECIAL NEEDS RUNNING OUT INTO THE STREET.

SO THESE ARE ALL RISKS THAT WE CAN NO LONGER AFFORD TO TAKE AND NOT TO MENTION THE LIABILITIES INVOLVED IF ANY OF THIS WERE TO HAPPEN.

LASTLY, THERE'S ALSO THE ISSUE OF EQUITY.

SO GLADSTONE, ALLEN, EKSTRAND, ETC.

HAVE ALL THESE FENCES, SO I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY SHULL IS STILL NOT THERE.

AND UPON DOING SOME RESEARCH, A PLAUSIBLE SOLUTION IS TO PLACE TABLES UNDER THE EXISTING SOLAR PANELS BEHIND THE PLAYGROUND.

I DO UNDERSTAND THAT THERE THAT WE'RE WAITING FOR A GRANT TO ENLARGE THE CAFETERIA TO ACCOMMODATE THE OVERFLOW.

BUT WE KNOW IT TAKES YEARS FOR THOSE THINGS TO COME INTO FRUITION.

SO I'M ASKING THAT WE PUT A TANGIBLE PLAN WITH A CONCRETE TIMELINE INTO PLACE, AND I LOOK FORWARD TO COLLABORATING WITH THE BOARD, THE DISTRICT PARENTS, STUDENTS, TO ENSURE THAT THEY'RE SAFE BECAUSE THEY'RE SO PRECIOUS TO US.

I ONLY SAY THAT BECAUSE I LOVE SCHOOL AND SHULL, IT HAS CHALLENGED ME ACADEMICALLY.

WE ARE A BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL, AFTER ALL.

I WANT TO BE AN ENGINEER WHEN I GROW UP AND SHULLS' PREPARING ME TO SUCCEED NOT ONLY IN SCHOOL, BUT IN PREPARING ME TO LIVE MY PURPOSE.

SO AS YOU CAN SEE, I'M VERY PROUD TO BE AT SHULL.

WITH THAT BEING SAID, I WOULD HATE FOR ANYTHING TO CUT MY, MY OR THE DREAMS OF MY SCHOOL MADE SHORT.

AT THE MOMENT, MY CLASSROOM CAN BE ACCESSED BY ANYONE WALKING ON THE STREET, SO I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A FENCE TO KEEP ME, MY CLASSMATES AND MY TEACHERS SAFE.

IN ADDITION, I WOULD LIKE TO.

I WOULD ALSO LIKE THERE TO BE A MORE SECURE SEATING AREA AT LUNCH TIME FOR MY SCHOOLMATES.

AS OF RIGHT NOW, ALL OF US ARE BEING SEATED AT THE FRONT OF THE SCHOOL.

LIKE I SAID EARLIER, ANYBODY COULD CAUSE HARM TO MY CLASSMATES AT THE FRONT OF THE SCHOOL, WHICH IS WHY WE ARE PROPOSING TO HAVE MORE TABLES AT THE BACK OF THE SCHOOL UNDERNEATH THE SOLAR PANEL.

THIS WOULD BE GUARANTEED TO HELP PROTECT ALL THE STUDENTS AT LUNCHTIME.

ALSO, IT WOULD SERVE AS A MORE COMFORTABLE AREA TO SIT AT RATHER THAN THE CAFETERIA, WHICH IS ALWAYS JAM PACKED WHEN THE GRADE IS HIGHER THAN KINDERGARTNERS EATING IN IT.

THIS GRADE WAS SEATED ON ONE SIDE, WHILE FOURTH GRADE WAS ON THE OTHER.

ON EITHER SIDE, THERE WAS JUST BARELY ENOUGH ROOM TO CRAM BOTH GRADES IN.

I SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE AS MY ELBOWS ARE SQUISHED AND IT'S HARD TO EAT WHEN YOUR ELBOWS ARE SQUISHED.

BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY THAN OUR COMFORT IS OUR SAFETY.

SO MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, I ASK THAT WE INSTALL A GATE AND PROVIDE US WITH A MORE APPROPRIATE AND SAFE LUNCH SEATING AREA.
